Chapter One: Thirteen

June 1973

Summer was right around the corner and Petunia felt the excitement of a new adventure skitter across her awareness. Memories from before were still fading slowly, and the promises she had made sat inside her soul like a comforting blanket. Lily’s birthday party was where it had begun before, and it was only fitting that it began anew on the very same day.

Sitting on the window seat in her bedroom, Petunia looked up at the stars that shone brighter than she ever remembered seeing them. Pulling her legs up to her chest, Petunia wondered to herself if she had even tried to gaze up at the night sky and felt the beauty of it like she was doing now. She knew she and Lily used to sneak out of the house with blankets and pillows and lie on the grass and gaze up, talking to each other, laughing, teasing. Those were wonderful but long forgotten days.Smiling to herself, she pushed off the window seat, grabbed a blanket and pillow, then went to Lily’s room to find her sister was also still awake.

“Petunia, what are you doing?”

“Remember when we’d sneak out of the house and lie on the grass watching the stars?”

Lily’s smile was as bright as the sun to Petunia as she jumped off her bed, grabbed her blanket and a pillow and the two snuck down to their backyard where they laid out their blankets and rested their head on their pillows.

“You’re not mad, are you Pet?”

Petunia turned on her side and stared a moment at her sister before she said anything. She wanted to be sure of her own mind before speaking.

“No, Lilybud, I’m not mad. I’ll miss you so much, but Grandmama and Mother have something exciting planned for me, so it won’t be all bad.”

“I’m so excited for you, Pet. I knew Grandmama was special, but she never told us she had magic. Is that why all those strange things have been happening to me?” Lilly’s face scrunched up in worry as she plucked at the exposed grass. Petunia knew her sister was having a difficult time lately. Even the other kids at school and around the neighborhood had noticed something weird had been going on with Lily.

“Maybe. I dunno.”

“Sev thought I might be special, but he wouldn’t tell me. Maybe now he’ll actually talk to me.”

Petunia knew this was another critical moment for her. Memories of the boy that Lily had befriended in the neighborhood came to mind. She knew she had been tasked with something regarding the boy, but at the moment she couldn’t remember what it was. Her memories were fading more rapidly than she expected as her older self merged with her younger self. There was so much she needed to do, but wasn’t sure of how to go about doing it. Trusting her Goddess, and that little voice inside of her head was the most important thing she could do. For now she just had to wait and learn to enjoy her life with her sister once more.

“Maybe he’s scared, Lils. I dunno, maybe he thinks you’ll think he’s some kinda weirdo.”

“Maybe. But, I’ll see him tomorrow. We’re ‘sposed to play tomorrow. Wanna come? It could be fun.” Lily’s face lit up like it was the most brilliant suggestion she ever had. Petunia could only softly laugh at her sister, but there was no malice behind it.

“Only if I won’t be in the way.”

“Of course not, Pet. It’ll be brilliant! I just know if you give Sev a chance you’ll like him. I promise.”

Petunia sighed, but knew this was a critical moment for her, and her future as well as Severus’. Besides, it was always difficult to say no to Lily.

“Alright, I’ll come.”

The girls laughed with each other, told silly stories and for the moment were sisters like they had always been. Something sharp and hard that had lived inside Petunia as an adult faded away and softened. Her heart knew what it felt like to love Lily once more and the feeling was something Petunia wondered how she could have ever given it up in her past self.

“What’s wrong Petal? You look so sad. Don’t be sad. I’ll still write to you every day, and you can come visit me, and we’ll still have adventures when I’m home. Oh, please, sissy don’t be sad.” Lily’s fierceness was something Petunia had forgotten.

“Oh, Lily, I’m not sad. Was just thinking. I promise I’ll write to you everyday too. And I’ll tell you all about what I’m learning from Grandmama and I will look forward to any adventure with you.”

The girls startled as they heard the kitchen door open and someone approached them.

“What are you two doing?”

The girls looked up to see their mother holding a pillow and blanket in her arms.

“Just talking, Mama.”

“Oh, just talking, huh. Well, how about I join you and you can tell me all about what you two are conspiring over.”

The girls giggled as they made room for their mother to lay down in the middle. She told the best stories and soon Petunia felt her eyes slowly close as the first vestiges of sleep began to take hold. Looking one last time at her sister, Petunia could see that Lily was trying to stay awake a little longer, but soon lost her own battle. Both girls were holding hands draped over their mother’s tummy as her quiet voice helped them to drift slowly into sleep.

***

“Come on, we’re going to be late.” Lily hopped from foot to foot as she waited for Petunia to finish fixing her hair. She may not have been as girly as Lily, but Petunia, even at thirteen, liked to look good. Petunia liked bell bottom jeans and peasant tops with trainers and her hair pulled back in a ponytail with her natural blonde curls falling down her back.

Their mother had let her begin using lip gloss and it made Petunia feel so grown up. Lily was in a play dress, boots, and her flaming red hair pushed back with a headband. Some wisps escaped and gave Lily an even younger look. Petunia didn’t choose any of the jewelry she had started to accumulate from birthday and Christmas presents, she didn’t want to lose any of it. Finally satisfied she turned from her vanity and joined Lily in the hallway. The girls clasped hands and ran down the stairs, then to the kitchen where their mother had made a lunch for them to take.

“Be back before 6:00 girls. Your Grandparents will be here for dinner.” Mum handed them a basket with food and a couple of thermos bottles one with tea and one with water. “Have fun, and please try not to get too dirty.”

Petunia laughed as Lily rolled her eyes. Grabbing the basket, Petunia kissed her mum goodbye, with Lily doing the same right after. Then the girls were out the door and running down the road towards the field where they were supposed to meet up with Severus and a couple of the other kids from down the block.

“I can’t believe we only have a few weeks of summer left. I don’t want it to end.” Lily rushed ahead ready to begin whatever adventures lay before them. Petunia laughed at her sister’s antics. She was always ready to rush into the next adventure while Petunia was more conservative.

“I don’t either,” Petunia called after her sister, laughing at the way the younger girl ran towards the clearing.

“Sev! You’re here! And I have the most amazing news!” Lily ran full out towards the boy that waited along with some of the their other friends. Petunia just shook her head as she practically crashed into Severus and wrapped her arms around him.

“What with ‘er?” Their friend Sammy asked as she watched Lily with wide eyes.

“She got some news for her birthday. She’s going to go to a special school.”

“Oy, that’s brilliant. She’s certainly smart ‘enuff.” William ran over to the two friends who were still talking animatedly.

“You gonna miss ‘er?”

“Yeah. But, Mum and Grandmama have something for me. I think it’ll be okay. We are going to go visit her during the Holidays and she’ll be back home for breaks and stuff.”

Sammy eyed Petunia for a moment before she decided to run over to the group and give her own congratulations. The only ones left were Tilly and Jacob who were closer to Petunia. They had several classes together and had slowly become friends. She had almost alienated them by how she had let her jealousies of Lily seep in. Turning to her friends, who looked at her warily, Petunia knew she had apologies to make.

“I’m sorry for how I’ve been lately.”

“Truly, Petunia?” Tilly asked as she crossed her arms and gave Petunia a considering look.

“Yeah. I’ve been a prat to you two.”

“Got that right, love. We’ve been friends for like forever and all of sudden, you act like we ain’t good enough.” Jacob twisted up his mouth as he let his gaze linger on the summer grass at his fee.

“I dunno what got into me. I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to say all that stuff to you before school let out.”

Tilly and Jacob looked at each other, then at Petunia before smiles broke out on both their faces. “Yeah, a’right. I guess we can forgive you.”

Petunia laughed as she grabbed her friends in a hug before the three of them joined the others.

“Hey, Sev. How are you?” Petunia had suspected that Severus Snape’s homelife wasn’t the best. His clothes always looked like they didn’t quite fit, his hair was never properly groomed, and he looked defeated half the time. The only time she ever saw him smile was when Lily was around.

“Oh, uhh fine, I guess.” The boy looked nervous and Petunia knew why.

“Hey, uh, I want to say that I’m sorry. I’ve not been very nice to you and, well, yeah I’m sorry for that.”

Severus blinked rapidly for a moment before looking at Lily then back at Petunia. It took a moment for the boy to process that Petunia was actually being nice to him.

“Oh. Yeah. Okay.”

Petunia knew it would take time for Severus to trust her, but she was determined to show him that she had changed. The awkwardness lasted for a few moments before Lily grabbed Severus’ hand, then Sammy’s and they were off running. Petunia laughed as she watched them for a few moments before turning to Tilly and Jacob.

“Wanna go get some cokes at Mr. Gundersuns?” The small neighborhood market was on the other side of the clearing, it would only take them a moment to go and get everyone something to drink. She had a few pence in her pocket she had saved up for days like this.

“Alright. I’m thirsty.” Jacob was always game for whatever Petunia suggested. The three friends could keep an eye on the younger kids as they walked to the store. Petunia didn’t remember being this happy as a kid. It felt nice and she knew she didn’t want that feeling to end.

***

“You don’t have to be nice to me.” Severus sat with Petunia while she read and leaned against one of the trees near the small lake that was near the clearing the kids liked to play in.

“But I want to.” Petunia went back to her book and continued reading.

“But, why?”

Petunia set her book aside and turned towards Severus. After a few weeks hanging around Petunia and her friends, Severus had begun taking better care of himself. She knew his home life hadn’t changed, but having friends these past few weeks seemed to have lifted his overall demeanor.

“I dunno. You’re nice and you know all this cool stuff. You didn’t think Lily was crazy when all that stuff started to happen to her. You stuck by her.”

Severus looked out over the lake and seemed pensive to Petunia.

“You’re cool too. I mean, when you aren’t being all mean and stuff.”

Petunia nodded and took Severus’ meaning to heart. She was trying to be a good person and everytime she did something nice, or different she felt a warm glow deep down inside and somehow knew it was praise from her Goddess. Every night before bed she said a prayer to Danú. Keeping her pledge to her Goddess was easier than she thought it would be and Petunia knew that over time it would get easier and easier to keep that promise.

Looking at Severus, she wondered how she could have been so cruel to the boy the summer prior when Lily and him had first started to hang out.

“I’m sorry I was mean.”

Severus just shrugged a shoulder and turned back to his own book before speaking once more.

“It’s all right. Everyone seems to be mean to me just because I’m poor.”

Petunia took in a sharp breath and knew just how deeply the boy had been hurt. Not just by herself, but almost everyone in his life. It must have been so strange for him when Lily became his friend.

“Well, it shouldn’t matter. You’re cool and I like when you talk about plants and stuff. Even the ones I don’t really understand. Hey, have you ever seen the garden mum and I planted?”

Severus perked up and shook his head no.

“You want to?”

“Could I?”

Petunia laughed softly and stood up. She held out her hand for Severus to take, which he did and she helped the boy to his feet.

“Come on. Lily’s still out shopping with mum and grandmama. We’ll have the place to ourselves. I’ll make tea for us.”

“Uh, if…if you’re sure.”

“Don’t be silly. Of course I’m sure.”

Without any further discussion, the two set off towards the Evans house and Petunia took Severus to the back just outside of the kitchen.

“I like planting things. It’s fun to see them grow and to take care of them. I begged mum after spending time with grandmama in Ireland. She has a groovy garden. She can grow almost anything.” Petunia lit up as she showed Severus the herb garden she had begun the previous spring.

“Wow!” Severus looked impressed as he moved around the sections of raised garden beds separated by hedrows. “This is so pretty. You have so many cool plants.”

Petunia felt that warmth deep inside her again as she showed off her hard work. Someone else besides her parents and grandparents liked her garden. The feeling was so new that she wasn’t sure what to do with it. For now she took a deep breath and enjoyed the feeling.

“We have some edibles too. Wanna see those?”

“Oh, yes, please.”

Petunia laughed as she went to the side of the house where four long flower boxes went the length of the house.

“We have some begonias, dandelions, rocket, daisies and a few more. Mum and I use them for lots of things. Cooking, salads, even teas. She said next spring we can see about doing some veg in large pots in the back.”

“These are brilliant, Petunia. There’s all sorts of things you can do with your herbs and stuff. Did you know you can make salves and stuff?”

“I mean, I read a book on stuff like that, but I’ve never tried it.”

Severus bit his lip and became a little shy. It was a few moments before he began to speak again.

“If you want, I ah, I could show you some things.”

“Really?”

“Really. I have a garden. But I have to keep it a secret. Dad doesn’t like it when I uh…” Severus’ voice trailed off as he looked away from Petunia.

“Use your magic?”

“Yeah.”

“Would you show me your garden one day?”

The boy’s face lit up and even though Petunia smiled it broke her heart a little to know that Severus’ family didn’t support him.

“Of course!”

“Okay, I’ll be back. You can go sit at the patio table.”

Petunia ran to the house and began to make the special tea that her and her mum had come up with. Everyone who tried it had enjoyed it. While the water was boiling, she got a couple of plates out and began to pull out some stuff to make sandwiches, laid out a few cookies, a couple of the scones from the morning, and some of the cold roast chicken. She had the sandwiches done by the time the water was done boiling.

Taking her tea blend she put some in the strainer for the teapot and set it inside. Being careful, Petunia poured the hot water in and began to steep the tea. Getting a tray she set the two plates, cups, a cup of milk, some lemon wedges, and the little sugar bowl and took the whole thing outside and set it down on the table. Running back inside she grabbed the teapot and carefully took it to the table.

“I just need plates and stuff then we can have tea.”

Severus smiled and nodded while Petunia went back in the house and got plates, silverware, napkins, and serving forks. Taking the last of the items outside, she set everything up and poured the tea into the cups then sat down.Petunia carefully watched as Severus doctored up his tea to his liking and took a tentative sip. His eyes lit up and a wide smile slowly formed on his face.

“Oh, this is good!”

“Yeah?”

“Oh, yes. What’s in it?”

“It’s a young green leaf tea, hibiscus, a touch of lilac and lavender. Mum helps me dry the flowers.”

“I love it. You’re very good at that.”

Petunia blushed at the compliment. She took a plate and dished up some of the food for Severus and then herself. The two talked about flowers and plants and Petunia was impressed by Severus’ wealth of knowledge, especially for his age.

“Can I get some water, please?” Petunia ran into the house and poured the both of them some water and walked back to the table. As she was setting the glasses down, she accidentally hit the side of the table and spilled the whole thing onto Severus. The boy looked up at her with fear in his eyes.

“Oh, gosh, Sev, I am so sorry. Here, come with me and we’ll get your shirt dried.”

Severus sat where he was, his breathing coming in short pants as his cheeks stained a deep red.

“Sev, are you all right? I didn’t mean it.” Petunia felt herself about to cry, and it took a moment for Severus to say something.

“I..um…it’s all right.”

“No, it’s not. I am…” It took Petunia a moment, but she noticed through the shirt the boy was wearing something across his chest. “Sev?”

Closing his eyes Severus looked ready to bolt, but Petunia laid a hand on his arm.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

“Can I use your bathroom?”

“Of course. Come on, I’ll show you.”

Severus nodded and Petunia showed him the way. She stood outside and waited for him.

“Do you have something I could wear while, um, while my shirt dries?”

Petunia knew he could dry it with magic, Lily had told her about some of the little things that Severus could do. But, there was also something about secrets and stuff so she wasn’t sure on the etiquette. She would ask him about it later.

“I have a plain tshirt.”

“Okay.”

Petunia went to her bedroom and found the plain dark blue tshirt in her drawer. She went back down to the downstairs bathroom and knocked. Severus opened the door just a bit and held out his hand for it. Petunia wasn’t sure why he was so shy. Every boy she knew went around shirtless in the summer, especially when playing in the fields, or going swimming in the lake.

She waited just outside the door in case Severus needed anything, then she heard some cursing and a little bit of crying.

“Sev, can I help? I promise whatever is wrong I won’t be mean. I promise.”

“You swear?”

“I swear. I double swear.”

She heard a sigh and then the door opened letting her in. His back was to her and a towel was held in front of him, but there was something different. Something she couldn’t put her finger on. The bruises weren’t a surprise and it broke her heart. Then the boy spoke and pulled her out of her musing.

“You have to promise you won’t tell anyone.”

“Sev, whatever it is I won’t tell anyone.”

“Not even Lily. Please.”

“Not even Lily.”

Severus turned around and dropped the towel. He then asked for help with the bandages around his chest. Petunia wasn’t sure what was happening, but she helped him take them off, then he turned around and Petunia immediately knew why Severus was afraid. He was actually a she.

“Sev?”

“I can explain. But, please don’t make fun.” Petunia didn’t know what to make of what was happening, but there was no way she was going to make fun of someone so vulnerable. She knew that the life she lived before, this very thing would have disgusted her, but it had been her own internalized issues that would have made her lash out. She didn’t understand what was happening, but there was something in the back of her mind that told her Severus was a boy contrary to what she saw with her eyes.

“I won’t. Give me your things and I’ll put them in the dryer. It won’t take long.”

The bandage was as sopping wet as the front of Severus’ shirt. Petunia took the items and left Severus to get dressed while she put the items in the dryer and started it spinning. A moment later Severus came out of the bathroom and still looked as frightened as a kitten.

“We can go to my room. I’ll clean up outside. Do you want more tea?”

Severus nodded and Petunia took a few moments to bring in the food and all of the cups, plates, and other items. She put everything where they should go, then got a fresh pot of tea going. She filled the cups and carefully made her way upstairs to her room.

“Here, this should help calm you. It’s chamomile and rose.” She set the hot cup on her nightstand, and with her own cup in her hands sat on her bed next to Severus. It was a while before they began to speak.

“I was born a girl. But, I don’t like any girl things. I never felt like a girl. I always wanted to be outside, in the dirt, or dressing like a boy and stuff. I told my da one day and…” Severus scrunched up their face and looked on the verge of tears once more.

“He hurt you?”

Severus nodded and all Petunia did was pull the boy into her arms. She knew there would have been a time she would have scoffed and ridiculed anyone like Severus, but after spending time and getting to know him, it didn’t matter to Petunia. He was her friend, no matter what.

“Is that why you always keep your hair in that bun?”

“Yes.”

Petunia thought for a moment and then had a brilliant idea.

“I could cut your hair. I style dad’s all the time. Mum doesn’t like to do it, and Dad says going to the barber is just a waste of his money. So, I was elected to do it for him. I’m pretty good.”

Severus looked up at Petunia with wide eyes.

“You…you’d do that for me?”

“Of course.”

It was only a matter of a half an hour and Severus had a new haircut, clean and dried bandages that Petunia helped them with as well as a dried shirt. When Lily and the rest of the family got home, the tea had been put away as had all of the food the two kids didn’t eat. When Lily saw Severus’ new haircut she squealed and told him he looked amazing.

Petunia vowed to help Severus with their wardrobe and maybe find a better way to bind themselves so they didn’t have to deal with the bandages which would stretch out over time. She kept her promise not to tell Lily anything, even if she hated keeping any secrets from her sister.

Severus was invited to dinner and graciously accepted. From that day on, Sev was quite the fixture at the Evans household and Lily and Petunia grew closer as not only sisters, but friends as well.

***

The day had come for Lily to be off to Hogwarts. Severus was with her and the two of them rushed the wall where platform 9 3/4’s lay behind. Petunia wasn’t as freaked out about magic as she had been in her previous life. Lily had small bouts of accidental magic, but Severus knowing a little about what was happening helped Lily with her control.

Also, Petunia had found a pattern for something for Severus to use in place of the stretchy bandages and after a few failures, the two of them were able to get something made to help them. Petunia knew they were nervous about going to school but, somehow she knew he was going to be fine. Both Lily and Sev promised to write Petunia as often as possible.

“They’ll be fine, Petal.”

“I know, Dad. I never said thank you to you and Mum for helping Sev. You know his Dad isn’t a good person.”

“I know, kiddo. We did what we could and maybe we can help even more when they get back home.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. Now, come on, you have your own school to get ready for.”

Petunia didn’t want to go to school without Lily, but she had her friends Jacob and Tilly. Petunia hoped she could make more friends this year. Sighing she followed her father to the car and was silent on the way home. Her school started the next week, but there was a lot to get ready for. When she got home, Petunia was surprised to see her Grandparents there.

“There’s my special girl.”

“Grandmama, what are you doing here?”

“Oh, child. I’m here to take you home with me. We can’t start soon enough on yer education.”

Petunia stood in the kitchen feeling confused.

“But, I thought I was going to school next week.”

“Ye’ are. Ye will be homeschooled while you be learnin’ the O’Flannigan legacy. Don’t worry. You’ll be havin’ lots of friends. There will be other children yer age and a bit older all learnin’ what ye are.”

“Oh.” Petunia was stunned, but there was a bubble of excitement deep down inside that she was making a completely new start.

“Mum, Dad?”

“It’s going to be fine, sweetie. We’ll see you at Christmas, and in fact, you won’t be far from your Sister.”

“Really?”

“Really. Now, let’s sort out yer things and take only what is most important to you.”

Petunia didn’t know what to think. This wasn’t what she thought was going to happen, but she couldn’t say that she wasn’t looking forward to the changes this would make in her life. Her Mum and Grandmama helped her pick out the best clothes for her to take with her. She also packed all of the fabrics and items she had bought over the summer to begin making clothes for herself and for Severus. She had patterns for a coat for Lily, a handbag for her mum, and something for her Dad as well. She wanted to make some special Christmas gifts for her family.

She made plans to see her friends and tell them what was happening and where she was going. She had a feeling that the next year there was a lot of letter writing in her future. Later that night, after getting into bed, Petunia took out the diary she had begun earlier in the year. She read back the pages before she had changed and cringed at the terrible things she had written.

The pages after Lily’s birthday party were different because she was different. She had friends, an adventure of her own to look forward to, like spending time with her Grandparents learning new things. Petunia’s mum had said that her Aunties would be there as well and a few cousins she only knew from holidays.

Petunia was thirsty like she had never been before. It was like her curiosity and imagination had been cut off from her when she had refused her Grandmother the first time around. This time she would embrace it with everything inside of her. After writing out her thoughts, Petunia snuggled down in bed and smiled to herself as she began to plan all of the things she wanted to do and see. That warm feeling that had been with her all summer felt brighter than ever and it made Petunia know that she was on the right track.

The memories were still fading and merging and she knew that by the time she went to her Grandparents house in Ireland, most of that old life would be gone. Only the knowledge of her Goddess and the promises she had made would stay with her, and those memories that were important would surface when needed, but not before. Petunia would truly begin a new life and make all new memories. Better ones. Ones not filled with anger and hate, but love and adventure. So many new things awaited her and it was with that knowledge that she fell into a wonderful dream filled sleep.

Chapter Two: Fifteen

June 1973

“Now, let’s see yer fire.”

Theine,” Petunia held out her hands and concentrated before she spoke the spell. It took mere seconds for a small fire to be formed in her hands. It was the first spell she had learned when she came that first year to her Grandmother’s house.

“Ah, beautiful, child. Now, light.”

Petunia extinguished the fire like she had been taught before moving on to the next spell. This time she held her right hand out palm forward and fingers pointed upward.

Láimhe.” A ball of light floated in the air in front of her outstretched hand.

“Good. We’ll practise a few more, then I’ll be showing you something new when you’re done with your schooling for the day.”

Petunia at first wanted to baulk at the continued training of the early spells she had learned, but eventually, she understood. It was like how their mum taught them cooking. You always went over the basics, no matter what you were learning. Especially in baking. A second later her Grandmother’s soft lilt pulled her out of her head and made her focus on the day ahead.

“Then, we’ll harvest, and check on what your drying and seeing if anything is ready.”

“All right, Grandmama.”

“But, you best be getting off to your Aunties for school.”

Petunia had been taking her classes with her Aunts at her Aunt Clarey’s house. They schooled most of the children in the village as it was too far off the grid to go to the local school. Once a month a school administrator would come and give them exams to make sure they were keeping up with the proper curriculum. All of the kids were in different grades, but it worked for the small village and there were no higher standards than the education her Aunts were putting them through.

Then there was the magical testing above and beyond the secular. The Coven that the Aunts were a part of came 3 times a year to test Petunia and the three other children that were also being taught in the old ways. As they advanced through the magical curriculum, they were taught more advanced magical concepts. If they failed they had to keep practising until the next round of testing.

“See you later Grandmama. Are we still going to see Lily and Severus this weekend?”

“Of course, child. But, you have a lot to finish before we do.”

“Okay, see you later, Grandmama.”

Petunia grabbed her books, her lunch box, and her craft bag before leaving to walk the half-mile to her Aunt’s house. The farm was just on the edge of the main village, but the walk was always pleasant.

While she made her way to school for the day, Petunia thought back to the last couple of years and realized how happy she actually was. She knew there was a time she hadn’t been, but those feelings and vague memories faded to where she felt removed from that part of her life. There was a kind of knowing that would come over her when she moved far away from the person she had been. She knew her Goddess was still guiding and protecting her.

Petunia was excited that the Summer holidays were close and she was looking forward to them. Her mum and Dad were coming up to Granmama’s as well as Lily and Severus. There were a couple of other boys that were going to be staying for a couple of weeks, but Petunia had only met one boy, James. Lily in her letters seemed over the moon about the boy. The other one was Sirius. Lily had not talked about Sirius much, only that he and James were best friends.

Petunia kept up her prayers every night to her Goddess, she even had a small altar in her room at her Grandmama’s as well as her room back home. So far, Danú had not shown herself, but Petunia always felt that warm glow inside of her as long as she stayed on the right track. She never wanted to know what it would feel like to stray away from her purpose. Petunia had a feeling that she wouldn’t like it at all. Pulling herself out of her musings when she arrived at her aunt’s house, the other children were already gathered in the large room they used as a schoolroom.

“Good morning everyone. We have a lot to do today, so why don’t we get started.”

First up was English, which was Petunia’s favorite class. Her year mates were reading some of the British classics, this year they were reading the works of the Bronte sisters. Jane Eyre had become one of Petunia’s favorites.

The discussion was lively, and the younger children were with Aunt Maddie, they were reading something more appropriate to their ages, but Petunia didn’t pay attention to that.

Classes moved quickly that day, homework was turned in, and assignments were given out. The administrator was going to wait until the end of the school year for exams, so it was six weeks to prepare. Petunia was a better-than-average student and she was lucky in that her Aunts made school enjoyable.

Lunch came and went, as did Math, Science, and World History. At the end of the day, Petunia was tired, but her favorite part of the day was coming up. Her aunts, Petunia, and the other children studying The Craft all trudged back to Grandmama’s house where they studied a different kind of curriculum.

“Ah, there’s my darlings.”

“Hello, mum. Where are we starting today?”

“Maddie, why don’t you take Jenna and work on her conjuring skills. Clarey, take Sienna and begin to show her how to look for wild plants, and I’m going to work with Petunia and Simon. Come on, children. I have something special to show you.”

Simon was Petunia’s age and already quite handsome. He often looked at Petunia like he wanted to ask her something, but was too shy about it. Petunia thought about asking if he’d like to go with them on the weekend to see her sister, but she’d have to ask her Grandmother firs, which she planned to do at dinnertime.

“Here we are.”

Petunia saw a small circle outlined with white stones.

“Today, we will begin to learn how to create portals.”

Petunia had only heard in passing her Aunts and Grandmother talking about portals. The only information she had was they could be dangerous if not properly and carefully created. Petunia was nervous, but she had come to trust her Grandmother’s guidance and teachings.

“You both are old enough and have shown enough responsibility that I feel you’re ready to begin this lesson. You won’t be able to make anything meaningful right away, but proper etiquette, hand movements, and intent are all important.

“Now, Petunia, stand in the middle of the stone circle. I’m going to cast a protective circle so if anything goes wrong we can control it before anything too bad happens.”

Petunia looked at her Grandmama like she was nuts, but did as she was told. The protective magic was cast and Petunia closed her eyes, centered herself, and felt deep down inside her where the magic lived and trusted in it. Taking a deep breath she let her anxiety go before opening her eyes and letting her Grandmother know she was ready..

“Now, think of your Aunt Clarey’s house. Keep that destination in your mind and don’t let it go. Raise your right arm out to your side, palm out, fingers together like this.” Grandmama showed Petunia exactly how to hold out her right arm and she copied the movement. “Your left arm you want over your head and palm up almost like your holding something, like this.” Again, Grandmama demonstrated and Petunia copied her. “Good, now you chant these words, fosgail an doras while keeping where you want to go in your mind.”

Petunia chanted the words and kept picturing her aunt’s house in her mind. She felt a swell of power, the same feeling she got when she made fire or light. Or when she made her charms, tinctures, and salves. But, this felt bigger, the longer she chanted, and just when her arms felt too tired to keep holding up something happened. A small window opened that she could look through and saw the front of her aunt Clarey’s house. Then, the power snapped and the small portal closed.

“Wonderful Petunia. That was simply wonderful. Don’t you worry now that it was small, as you get more practice, you’ll get better.”

Petunia leaned down with her hands on her knees, breathing deeply she was able to get herself centered once more. “Is that how you always came to see us?” Petunia asked as she slowly stood up.

“Of course. Why pay for a plane ticket when I can just, whoosh right on through.” Grandmama laughed before taking down the protective barrier, then Simon took a turn to give Petunia a break. Over the next couple of hours, the two teens took turns practicing with varying degrees of success.

“Don’t get discouraged. You won’t always get it right, but that is what practice is for. Once you make a proper portal, I’ll show you shortcuts.” Grandmama winked at Petunia who just laughed.

“Now, let’s see to your plants and see what you have in the works.”

On the way to the workroom Petunia finally turned to Simon to speak with him.

“Si, I uh, I was wondering would you like to come with us to meet up with Lily this weekend?”

Simon’s eyes widened as he looked at Petunia. His cheeks slowly stained red, and he shuffled one foot as he appeared like he wanted to speak. Petunia was patient.

“I, uh, I would, yeah, I..yes. Yes, I would like to go with you.”

Petunia smiled softly and began walking again towards the workshop that had been built inside the barn. No more horses or large animals had inhabited the building for a long time, so her Grandmama had taken the place for herself and built sections in the large building for different things.

There was an area just for drying plants, herbs, and flowers. A section for metal and woodworking for charm and jewelry making, two large cooling sections that have things to make salves, creams, bath and body products, and an area with a stove and a long chopping block to make oils, tinctures, teas, and other edible items.

Petunia went right to the table where some charms were waiting for final assembly and her magic to be worked into each piece. Every student had their own work areas at each place, as well as the aunts and her Grandmama.

Grandpa had a section of the barn where he made instruments, figurines, and other woodworking items. His string instruments were sought after from far and wide, and he had a couple of apprentices studying under him to take over when he no longer could. There was always a lot of activity in the barn, and Petunia enjoyed it more than she thought she would.

“Here, Grandmama. I’m almost done with these charms here. I’ve got several things drying over there,” Petunia pointed to the drying racks with her name on them then turned back to her Grandmother.

“Why don’t you finish those, then I’ll start showing you how to make some of the new home and bath products we make.”

“All right.”

Petunia turned to her workstation and hopped on the stool. She pulled down the thin leather she had dyed the week before and cut lengths to make the complicated Celtic knots she had learned to make during her first year with her Grandmother. Each Hedge Witch, for that was what Grandmama called them, had their own style of working. Petunia had stumbled on the knots in a book she found when Grandmama and Grandpa took Petunia into Waterford for a weekend. She fell in love with the intricate details of the knots. She started with the easy ones, and as she grew bolder with her designs added beads and charms.

As Petunia worked each knot, the intent for the charm was worked into each pass, and each bead was placed carefully in the necklace or bracelet. She invoked the charm as she worked, keeping concentration on the intent until the piece was finished.

After a couple of hours of working, it was time for a tea break, then Grandmama began to walk Petunia and Simon through the intricacies of making a couple of the bath products the family sold in Auntie Maddie’s store over in Dunmore East. It was a bit of a drive for her, but Aunt Maddie liked the area and the tourists kept the shop busy. She mainly went on the weekends as she had a shop manager she trusted.

Simon and Petunia worked for an hour with Grandmama before she finally put an end to the day’s lessons. It was near time for supper and relaxation.

“I’ll help with Supper, Grandmama. Does cold roast sammies and chips sound okay?”

“Sounds delightful.”

It wasn’t long before food was done and plated, and everyone was sitting around the table.

“Grandmama. I uh, I kinda asked Simon to go with us this weekend. Is that all right?”

Petunia nearly held her breath while she waited for Grandmama’s response.

“Of course. We’d be delighted if he came along. I think it’s good that you’ve made friends, Petunia. You always were such a quiet, serious child. We often wondered how you’d react to the knowledge that your family had a history of Witches and Mages. I am glad to see you’ve taken well to your learning.”

The warmth she felt this time was that of praise from her grandmama. She felt a sense of pride that she never remember having prior to starting her training. Life felt infinitely better than it had been prior to Lily’s birthday. The resentments that had built up had faded and Petunia continued on her path to redemption. She knew she was making up for something she had done some time in a past she didn’t remember, but it was a vague feeling that didn’t really go away. And for now, she just enjoyed being a teenager.

“Lilypad!” Petunia ran forward to meet her sister and pulled her into a hug.

“Petals!” Lily enthusiastically grabbed onto her sister and held on. The girls always greeted each other enthusiastically every time they saw one another. It made the adults softly chuckle to themselves, but Lily and Petunia ignored them and just fell into old rhythms with each other.

“I have so much to tell you and show you! Grandmama showed me something amazing!”

“That’s wonderful! I can’t wait to tell you everything. But first, I want you to meet my friends. You met James already. But this is Sirius, “ Lily then turned to her sister, “And, this is my sister, Petunia.”

Petunia smiled at the two boys, who Petunia could admit were quite cute.

“Well, Lily didn’t tell us that her sister was as pretty as she is.” James bowed and took Petunia’s hand and kissed the back.

“Wow. Okay then.” Petunia was shocked at the old-fashioned greeting.

“Oh, don’t take him seriously. He’s daft.”

Petunia laughed as she took the other boy’s hand. “Sirius Black. So, Lily says you can do magic, is that true?”

“Sirius, really.” Severus scolded his friend as he came up from behind the group.

“Oh come on, Sev. I’m just teasing.”

“Yes, well we all know what kind of teasing you get up to.”

Petunia laughed and pulled Severus into her arms hugging him close. “You’re going to love the new workspace. I have loads more things to show you. And, you can see how I make my charms.”

“I can’t wait.”

“Oh, everyone, this is Simon.” Petunia pulled the shy boy forward, whose cheeks stained red as he shyly smiled.

“Good to meet you, mate.”

“Um. Nice to meet you all too. Petunia said you guys go to a school somewhere in Scotland?”

“Yeah, it’s pretty cool” Lily laughed as she threaded her arm through Petunia’s and the two girls put their heads together, talking softly for a few moments as they trudged towards the family van that Grandfather had bought when Petunia came to live with them for her education.

“Simon is my partner-in-crime. Without you or Sev around, I had to have someone to help me with my schemes.”

Lily laughed softly as they continued to the vehicle. When they all got to the van, Sirius and James stopped and stared at it, almost like it would hurt if they touched it.

“You two are ridiculous. It’s a van. Just get in.” Lily snorted at the confusion on her friends’ faces.

“Oh lord. Wait until Sirius sees the television. If it’s anything like James’ reaction, this will be hilarious.” This time Petunia laughed as they all piled in. Grandfather asked if everyone was strapped in, he was always careful with everyone’s safety. Lily helped James and Sirius with their lap belts, then climbed over the seat to sit next to Petunia, who had Severus on her other side.

Grandfather drove them home, but they all trudged down to the beach that wasn’t far from their house and set out a picnic lunch. Petunia and Simon already had their swimsuits on under their clothes. Petunia stripped off her shorts, and crop top then ran towards the water. Simon wasn’t far behind her.

“That’s not fair. We didn’t know we were coming to the beach.” Sirius pouted and frowned. Lily knew because she spent half of her life on the beach. Their parents owned a beach hut on Brighton Beach, which they would go to almost every weekend in the Summer. Now, though, they spent the summers in Ireland with Grandmama and Grandpa. They still went to the beach, but they don’t have a hut as they aren’t as common in Ireland.

Petunia heard her Grandmother laughing and wondered what was going on. She ran up to where everyone had made an area for themselves. The boys looked out of place.

“Come on, boys. Let’s go up to the house, we have some stuff you can wear.” Petunia looked pointedly at Sev who gave her a small smile. It didn’t take long to get to the house, and Petunia found the swim trunks that had been bought for the boys just in case.

“Come on, Sev. I have something for you.” Petunia grabbed his hand and took him to her room. As soon as the door was closed she turned to her friend. “I have something for you.” She turned to the trunk at the end of her bed and pulled out the swim trunks, but also a shirt that he could use for swimming.

Severus gave Lily a small smile and a hug.

“Thank you, Pet. But, I’ll be okay with just shorts.”

“Oh?” Petunia was surprised as the last time she had seen Severus puberty had started to kick in and he had begun to fill out.

“The money you’ve been sending me for all of the potions and stuff you sell for me?”

“Yeah?”

“I went to a magical healer. They’ve been helping me.”

“Sev, helping you to do what?”

Severus smiled softly again before they spoke, “Become a boy.”

“Oh! They can do that?”

“The Goblins can. They’re brilliant at it, and my father doesn’t have to be told. When I’m 14 I can seek emancipation. I have my own vault, Pet. The Goblins are helping me keep the money secure and they’re brilliant at investing!”

“That’s great, Sev! Auntie Maggie keeps asking where I get the wonderful potions and stuff you make, but I’ve kept it secret. I know you don’t want a big to-do about it all.”

“Thank you. I’ve been doing this secretly. Professor Slughorn is impressed at how much I already know. It’s the one thing my mother did for me that I’ll always cherish.” Petunia watched her friend’s face and saw how incredibly young he was. She was given a gentle push, it felt like her Goddess was trying to impart some knowledge to her, and Petunia had learned over the years not to ignore those little pokes of her magic.

“Sev, I’ve never asked, but do you not have any other family?”

Severus sat hard on the bed and looked around Petunia’s room. “The Goblin’s are looking into it for me. There was some kind of break in the Prince family, but no one knows what really happened.”

“I hope they find out for you. I wish we could do more to get you away from your father.” Petunia took Severus’ hand and held it while they sat there in silence.

“Hey you two, can we go already?” Petunia heard James call up to them.

“Come on, we should go meet them.” Petunia stood and started back down while she let Severus change. Then he too came along and they all trudged back towards the beach.

“Petunia?”

“Yeah?”

“How are we able to get to the beach so fast? I thought you guys were closer inland.”

“We are.” Petunia smiled wide as she watched realization dawn on the boy’s faces.

“Magic?”

“Magic.” And that appeared to explain everything.

The afternoon went too fast as they played in the water, using warming charms on themselves as the water was still quite cold at that time of the year. A picnic was laid out for everyone, and after they were all sated, everyone once again did their own things.

Simon was quiet, but Petunia felt like he was having fun and it was good to see him interact with kids his age other than her. When the sun started to lower, everyone went back to the house where Sirius did indeed get shocked and confused over the television. That night the kids all piled in Petunia’s room where Lily took the second bed and the boys had cots and rollaways to sleep on. Exhaustion finally took them all over and sleep wasn’t far behind.

***

It was the third day of the summer vacation and Petunia was a little restless. Everyone else had fallen asleep from all of the activities that her Grandparents had planned for them. Quietly leaving her bed, she went to Lily’s and gently nudged her awake.

“Come on.” Petunia smiled as she clutched her blanket and pillow. Lily almost squeaked in delight but kept her voice down letting the boys sleep. She too grabbed her pillow and blanket and the two of them trudged down the stairs and out the back as silently as possible. A tent had been set up in the large yard and the top of it had a flap you could open to see out at the night sky.

“Oh, this is brilliant!”

“Grandad found it at the camping store.” Petunia laid out her blanket while Lily got comfortable.

“I miss doing this. I can’t ever sneak out of my dorm. I tried.” Lily laughed a little at herself, and Petunia wondered about what she did but didn’t ask. Lily would tell her if she wanted to. “ But sometimes I’ll sit in the window and look out wishing you were there with me.”

“Hey, Lils, how did Sev and James become friends? You had told me how they were bullying Sev and being jerks to him.”

Lily took her time in answering and Petunia knew this was going to be a serious conversation.

“Well, you know how Sev is brilliant at making potions and stuff. And it’s the one thing we can do even outside of school where we won’t get into trouble.”

Petunia still had a hard time wrapping her head around the idea that kids who were learning magic would get in trouble if they practiced their magic outside of school. She didn’t get into trouble, but the world Lily was now living in was so strange to Petunia.

“Yeah.”

“Pet, if I tell you something, you have to pinky swear promise that you won’t tell anyone else, and you have to promise you’ll believe me. Okay?”

Petunia could tell by the tone in Lily’s voice that this was a serious conversation. Moving to her side, she propped her head on her arm so she could face Lily, who mirrored her pose. Holding her other hand out with her pinky up, Petunia looked her sister in the eye.

“Of course, Lils. I super double pinky swear.”

Lily’s eyes went wide as she wound her pinky with her sisters.

“James’ friend Remus, he’s a sweet shy boy, but you see, he’s a Werewolf.” Lily’s waited with bated breath because in the past Petunia was known to tease Lily for her fantastical imagination.

But, there was something in Lily’s tone and the way she held herself that Petunia knew she wasn’t lying, or making things up. There were also the stories from Grandmama about things in the world much bigger and stranger than Petunia could ever know. Then, that nudge, the feeling deep inside where her Goddess lived had Petunia thinking about things for a moment before she smiled at her sister.

“I believe you, Lils.”

“You do?!”

Petunia laughed at how wide Lily’s eyes got.

“Yeah, I believe you.”

“Oh. Well, okay so Sev was out one night when it was the full moon, you see there are things that can only be harvested then, and Professor Slughorn had given permission for Sev to go. And he talked the Professor into letting me go with him because he hated doing it alone. So, you see we were out getting some things, like Blue Dewdrop Mushrooms, and a certain kind of moss that grows only on the night of the full moon, and some other stuff.

“Well, we got close to the Whomping Willow…”

“The what?” Petunia interrupted her sister and felt her own eyes widen as she thought how horrible that sounded.

“It’s a tree the Headmaster planted and they were growing it by magic so it got big and stuff. Anyway, we got too close and the darn thing hit me. A moment later a werewolf came running out of a shack that was hidden by the tree. We didn’t know what the heck was going on. They were snarling at the tree, but not us.

“We ran away while the wolf was distracted and got back to the castle and I stayed with Sev as we went up to our favorite tower. James and Sirius were waiting there for us. James was being a prat and started teasing Sev, and things got bad, then I don’t know where he got the courage but Sev sent a stinging curse at James which just made him stop for a moment. They thought we were out there lurking.

“What a dumbass.” Lily took a deep breath as she flopped onto her back and looked up at the darkened sky, the stars were blazing and the moon high and bright.

“So what happened?” Petunia wanted to know everything as she nudged her sister.

“We got the whole story and then Sev said he could help. Well, the boys being jerks, thought he was going to do something mean. But, I knew Sev wasn’t going to do anything bad and I was close to hexing James and Sirius for being so mean when Sev just asks them to trust him.

“For the next couple of months, Remus did better and he didn’t look so sad and sickly all the time. Sev had brewed him some potions to help at the full moon, and also a better nutrition regimen. James was shocked and he and Sirius called a truce. It took a little more time, but Sev was let into their circle and it’s been weird Pet.”

Petunia laughed at Lily’s dramatics as she fell back onto her blanket and looked up at the sky.

“And I’m sure you’re waiting for the bad to start up again, aren’t you?”

“It’s weird, Pet! I like that my best friend is getting along with my new friends, but it’s just weird.”

Petunia couldn’t help chuckling at her sister’s dilemma but let it go. She would talk to Severus herself later to confirm the story without Lily’s dramatics. But, if what he did was to help this Remus get better and control his changes, she could see how that might change the minds of the two boys that had picked on him for almost two years.

“Hey, Petunia…”

“Yeah?”

“I know Sev is keeping secrets from me, but I don’t know how to get him to tell me what it is.”

“Give him some time, Lils. He’ll let you know when he’s ready.”

“You have always been the practical one. I don’t…” Lily became quiet and shy suddenly and Petunia furrowed her brow wondering what Lily was going to say.

“What’s wrong, Lily?”

“It’s just…Oh Pet, I don’t know what I would have done if you had hated me for going away and learning magic. I would have just died knowing I lost my big sister.”

Petunia lay there looking up at the sky and wondered if she should tell Lily about the dreams that felt like more than just dreams she’s had and how horrible they were.

“Can I tell you something, Lily? But you have to pinky swear not to laugh.”

“Okay. I swear.” The girls twined their pinkies together and lay there in silence for a moment.

“Well, it’s like this. I’ve had these dreams that felt more like, I don’t know some kind of possible future, or a past life or something but see, I wasn’t a good person…” Petunia talked long into the night telling Lily everything she remembered, and the two cried together with Petunia making promises that she would never become that terrible, bitter person. She swore on her magic, and her Goddess, and when the two girls were bathed in a magical biding, Petunia knew her Goddess had blessed her and bound her promise between the two girls. A few moments later the two fell asleep with good dreams about what was planned for the rest of the summer.

Chapter Three: Seventeen

October 1975

Petunia had been working hard with her Aunties on her academics, the proctors had come for that month to give their tests and see how all of the kids in the village were doing. She had missed her parents greatly, but the year before her father had found a good job not far from where Petunia’s grandparents were and they relocated from England to Ireland.

The house they bought was only about a half-hour away and her Aunt Maddie would take Petunia there on the weekends, where they all had Sunday roast together. She had missed her mother’s cooking, as well as a lot of other things. She loved her grandmother and her aunties, but there was something special between her mother and her, as there was between Lily and their mother.

Currently Petunia was laying in her bed in her parent’s house stretched out reading through some letters that she had received that week. One was from Severus, one from Lily, and strangely enough one that had been written between James, Sirius, and Remus. Petunia couldn’t help but laugh at that one. It seemed par for the course for those three. They were as close as brothers.

Petunia had gotten to know Remus a little the summer previous as he was dragged by Lily along with her other friends to Petunia’s grandparent’s house. They spent three weeks, then afterward spent three weeks with James’ parents.

Smiling to herself, Petunia opened the letter from Severus.

Petunia,

How are you? I’ve got some news to tell you, but I don’t have a lot of time right now, a lot going on, but I wanted you to know. The Goblins, they, well, they found my family. I have a Grandfather, two Uncles, Aunts, and a couple of cousins. When they heard about me and what my life has been like they offered to take me in! Merlin, I’m so overwhelmed I don’t know how to feel right now.

I’ve also been emancipated from my Father. It seems my mother had a small vault that was supposed to have been her dowry to my Father. It appears that my Grandfather had not liked my Father and had the vault sealed so he couldn’t touch it. Now, it’s been given to me! Isn’t that brilliant? There’s money, and some furniture, books, and other things in it. It’s not large, but it’s enough that I don’t have to be so poor anymore.

Petunia had to take a moment and send up a thank you to whatever deities were listening that they had helped Severus out of the horrible circumstances he had been in. It was a relief to Petunia that her friend had family, she just hoped they turned out to be all that he hoped they were.

I had thought that the only path for me was becoming a teacher, but I must confess I hate the idea. It’s not that I hate children, but the thought of being around them all day every day would be some kind of nightmare! Or torture, definitely torture. I mean one can only take so much snot and other bodily functions at a time. I don’t want to think about. And, I don’t know if Lily has told you, but those charms you gave us, they are certainly Merlin sent. I don’t want to say anything in a letter, but I’ve felt unsafe around certain adults here. I keep the medallion hidden, and Lily, James, Sirius, and myself, we’ve started to lay charms and wards over ourselves because there are strange things happening. I’ll be able to tell you more when we see you in December for the Solstice. Just know that things are starting to turn around for me, Pet.

Your friend always,

Severus Snape.

Petunia worried. That summer there had been something very strange about Lily, James, and Sirius’ behaviour, that it prompted her Grandmother to have the Coven check them all out. They had found several charms and manipulations had been put on Lily and her friends. It had taken a couple of rituals, and charms made by Petunia, infused with her magic and special braiding that represented each of her friends to make sure they were each protected.

The Coven had gotten together to make up batches of draughts that would help the kids stay charm and manipulation free as they went back to school in December. The Coven along with her Grandmother had put in a complaint with someone in Government that liaised between the different magical traditions and the Wizarding World. Petunia wasn’t one for politics, but she knew it was serious. Several meetings had taken place and her Grandmother had been invited to speak. It was all very strange, but Petunia didn’t want to be involved in all of the politics.

Drinking some of her tea she set the cup back down and pulled Lily’s letter out, which told her many of the same things Severus had. Then, there was a surprising section of the letter that Petunia was mildly shocked by.

Oh Pet, Sev finally confessed to me what he has been keeping from me all these years. He told me that he had been born a girl, but never felt like it and he always dressed the way he did to hide what he had been born as. I never knew that’s why his father treated him so badly! Oh Pet, it made my heart break for him. I know I should be shocked, but frankly, I’m not. The Wizarding World doesn’t see these things as strange or abhorrent like I know the Muggle world does.

I’m just glad that Sev could finally confide in me. He told me how you’ve been helping him for these past few years. Pet, I truly didn’t believe you would have had it in you. But, after your confessions about your dreams and how you’re trying to be a good person and not the one you saw in those terrible visions, I’m glad he had you.

He said he is going to talk with his Grandfather when they finally meet as the final transition for him is quite expensive for the Goblins to perform. And, I know you’ve been sending him money for all of those lovely potions and stuff he makes and sells at Auntie Maddie’s store. Oh Pet, I am just over the moon that my friend is finding much better circumstances and that he’s no longer being bullied so badly.

I have to go, but I’ll write again soon. I love you, Sister.

Always yours, Lily.

Petunia set the letter aside and smiled softly. As she was ageing the memories of who she had been previously started to slowly be introduced to her. She remembered how she was in her past life at the age of seventeen, which had been an already bitter, depressed, and angry person. There were many reasons she had been like that, but her own circumstances were different, and Petunia was happier than she thought possible.

She turned to the last letter which made her laugh hard enough to have tears leak from her eyes. The description of the lake monster and Sirius being dangled by a tentacle above the water, with James trying to serenade it to calm it down had Petunis laughing so hard her sides were hurting. Those boys were horrible and their jokes terrible, but she found them funny and endearing. Petunia knew Lily also had female friends, but she had not met them as of yet. She hoped when her family went to Hogsmeade during the holiday season that she would be able to meet more of Lily’s friends.

Simon and the newer student, Siobhan, were Petunia’s friends outside of Severus and Lily. She liked it that way. Where Lily was the bright, outgoing one, Petunia was more reserved and a little shy. Siobhan had been a surprise to Petunia and the two girls got on quite well together. Though, there were some strange new feelings towards Siobhan that Petunia didn’t quite understand. But, she wasn’t going to think about them at the moment, she had some homework to finish, then they were all going to watch the telly and have dinner.

Petunia also set her worries about what may be going on at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry hoping that whatever Lily and her friends were scared of was nothing more than some growing pains, but something in what Sev had written her set not a small amount of fear simmering deep inside Petunia.

***

Petunia loved the village that was a little way outside of Kilkenny. It was far enough away that it felt isolated but close enough to the city it was easy to get there. Siobhan and Simon were with her as they roamed the streets doing some shopping, and making their way to a favourite pub to get a bite to eat. Simon had roamed away to the bookstore hoping the new delivery of his preferred comics had come in. That left the two girls alone.

“Petunia, can I ask you something? But, please be kind if your answer is no.”

Siobhan seemed nervous to Petunia, so she just nodded and waited to see what she was going to ask.

“You know my Da taught me to drive.”

“Yes. Granddad helped me get my licence already. I’m saving up for a car. Aunt Maddie says my charms are doing well. How about you?” Petunia asked as she threaded her arm through Siobhan’s. She had an inkling of where this conversation was going, but she would wait to hear the other girl out.

“Da already got me a car. It’s a used little Italian thing, but it’s wonderful to drive. He’s going to bring it to me this weekend when he and Mam are here for a visit.”

“Oh, that’s exciting!”

“Yes. And Mr. Gregory has already said I can work part-time for him at his store. And with the money I get from your Grandmama, I’ll be able to afford the upkeep. So, I was thinking…”

Petunia held her breath while Siobhan gathered her courage.

“I was thinking if you’d like to go out. On…on a date.”

Siobhan and Petunia had been getting closer over the last few weeks, and Petunia began to feel things she never thought she would feel. Looking at Siobhan’s face she knew the girl was nervous. There was a good reason to be. While there weren’t a lot of same-sex partners in the village, she had seen people in the town that looked like they were together. Petunia was also aware of the violence against those in relationships that weren’t heterosexual.

Petunia’s heartbeat a little fast with the knowledge that the girl that she liked felt the same.

“Yes. I’ll go out with you.”

“You’re not…” Siobhan twisted her mouth in a worried expression.

“I’m not scared. I like you, a lot.”

“Oh,” Siobhan let the breath she was holding in go and moved in closer to Petunia as they continued to walk arm-in-arm down the street. To the world around them they looked like two close friends enjoying the day together. “There’s that new American romantic comedy, The Goodbye Girl, We could go see that, maybe go to the pub before?”

Petunia smiled as she laid her head on Siobhan’s shoulder. “That sounds brilliant.”

A few moments later, Simon joined them as they continued on towards the ice cream stand.

“You two look happy.”

“Yeah, we made plans for the weekend.”

“And my Da bought me a car! It’s not anything grand, but it’ll get me around.”

“That’s wonderful. I’m trying to save for that truck that Mr. Doyle down the road a bit there has for sale. He promised it to me if I can get him a downpayment. He’ll let me pay him ten pounds a month.”

“That’s brilliant Si.” Petunia let out a long sigh as she felt contentment deep down that she never thought she’d have. It hasn’t always been easy living part time with her Gran, and part time with her Mum and Dad, but she was happier than she would have been if she hadn’t taken the chance with her Grandmama.

“What about you, Petal?”

“I’ve got my savings. Grandad helped me open an account. I’ve put everything I’ve ever saved in it. All my birthday and Christmas money, as well as the money Auntie gives me from the store. I’m waiting until Dad comes up from Ardmore, and then we’re going to look for something I can afford.”

“How are they doing? It’s been a couple of years since they moved, right?”

“Yeah. Mum’s shop is doing well. People like her pots and stuff. Dad is thinking of retiring from being a lorry driver, and wants to buy a pub. I think he’d be brilliant, Mum thinks he’s barmy. But, Dad knows his stuff, you know?”

Simon and Siobahn just nodded and the three of them made it to the ice cream shop. They each got something a little decadent and a while later, Petunia’s Grandparents met them, and they all went home. Later that night after dinner found Petunia working on some knitting, and her Grandparents were watching the telly.

After a bit, Petunia put away her project, got up to get herself a glass of water, then came back and sat down.

“Gran, Granddad, so Siobahn and I are going to go out this weekend. Movie and the pub after.” Petunia bit her lip as her Grandparents turned to look at her.

“That’s nice, dear.” Petunia’s Grandmother just smiled and turned back to the telly as if this wasn’t as important as it was. Petunia felt put out as she sipped at her water. She pushed back her blonde strands and sighed.

“ Gran, we’re…well…” Petunia was getting a little tongue-tied as she sighed again as she looked dramatically towards the ceiling.

“Child, what are ya tryin to say?”

“Well, it’s a date.” Petunia bowed her head as she felt her cheeks heat up.

“You think I should be shocked? Girl, I’ve been watching you two circle each other for a time now. I see the way you look at each other and I think it’s lovely. I never had a care about who someone took up with, and I’m not startin’ now. You go right ahead and have fun now, but just remember to be safe with each other. I know not everyone is as enlightened.”

“Yes, Gran. Grandad has taught me well how to take care of myself.” Petunia looked up to see the small smile on her Grandad’s face. He had taught all of the kids that came through Gran’s training on how to protect themselves. The training also gave Petunia confidence in herself she had never had before.

“I think it’s lovely, sweetheart. You deserve to be happy, and it might not be the struggle I would have wanted fer ye, but you have to be true to yerself.”

“Thank you, Gran. I love you.”

“Okay, I think it’s time we all retired for the night. Goodnight darling.” Grandmother stood and using the cane that she had been using as of late, slowly made her way to the stairs. Petunia jumped up and helped her Gran up, the two talked quietly as Petunia saw her Grandmother to her room.

“Thank you, love. Now you should get off to bed yourself.”

“I will Gran. Goodnight.”

Petunia wasn’t sure she heard right at first, but as she helped her Grandmother into bed she knew the woman spoke true. She kissed her grandmother’s cheek then went off to her own room. She knew her Grandfather would follow soon after he closed up the house for the night.

Petunia wanted to write some letters to Lily and Severus before she went to sleep. Then she recorded her thoughts and emotions in her journal, documenting everything she could about growing up and seeing the differences between before and now. Petunia set aside the journal when she was done, said her blessings to her goddess before she went to bed, then crawled under her covers falling asleep just moments later. As she fell asleep, Petunia’s thoughts turned to what she might wear on her first date with Siobahn.

***

Wrapped in warm coats, hats, and mittens, Petunia was arm-in-arm with Lily as they walked the quaint streets of the small town of Hogsmeade, their friends in little groups behind them as they made their way to the pub.

Petunia noticed she wasn’t the only outsider in Hogsmeade, there were other families there visiting the children who went to Hogwarts. She recognized those like herself, not quite like the Wizards and Witches from the school, but those who practised different kinds of magics. Petunia had been working on learning to read aura’s. Her Aunt Clarey had been over the moon when they all found out that Petunia could read a person’s aura and could pick out those that were practising Hedge or Kitchen witchery. Petunia and Lily had talked often about what Petunia learned from their Grandmother and how their individual world views had drastically changed since entering their respective magical societies.

Petunia walked into the sweets shop with Lily still on her arm, who was explaining about chocolate frogs, exploding snap, and Bertie Botts every flavour Beans among some of the other sweets and games the store offered. Petunia didn’t even try to contain her laughter at watching the antics of Lily’s classmates. Lily pulled away at a section with a variety of hard candies on display. She grabbed a small white bag and began to fill one. Petunia knew what a sweet tooth her sister had and wasn’t surprised when the bag was full in just a few seconds. Petunia preferred snacks that were salty and sour. As she contemplated some sour candies, Lily began to speak to her again.

“She’s lovely, Pet.” Lily smiled at her sister, whose face was red from the cold, but the smile on her face only grew as the two girls walked into the pub still wrapped up together.

“I’m so happy you like her, Lilypad. I was nervous you wouldn’t. We’ve been having the loveliest time together. We go on dates and she kissed me,” Petunia whispered as she leaned in close to Lily’s ear.

“Oh! You must tell me everything.” Lily softly laughed at the blush Petunia could feel creep up on her face. The others came in laughing, gently pushing and shoving each other as they did. When she turned to see Sev taking off his coat and noticed he wasn’t in the billowing black robes he had taken to, but in a fitted grey pinstriped robe with black piping that flared out flattering his body, and boots that looked expensive Petunia smiled.

“Sev! You look wonderful. I take it that you’ve had some success with your family?” Petunia asked as she took off her coat and piled it with the others as they took over a couple of large tables.

“Yes, I’ve met with my Grandfather several times now, as well as an Uncle. They’ve been really good to me and want me to come live with them in the summer. They took me shopping.” The face Severus made had Petunia laughing. She hated shopping herself normally, but when she did it with Lily, or Siobahn, it didn’t feel like such a chore.

“Oh, Sev, that must have been torture for you,” Petunia chuckled while Severus had a sour look on his face.

“I hated every minute of it.”

“Well, you look great. And, I’m happy for you.”

“It’s opened up a lot of opportunities. And, they genuinely like me, Pet. My Grandfather is of the mind that I should have some mind healing.” Severus made a face that had Petunia chuckling softly to herself, but

Petunia looked around the table and couldn’t help the overwhelming feeling of love and belonging she felt with those around her. There was a warmth deep down inside of her that she never wanted to let go of. Which was why she was thoroughly annoyed that their nice, calm afternoon was unceremoniously interrupted a moment later.

A loud commotion outside of the pub had everyone running to see what was going on. Several older boys and girls dressed in all black with some kind of facial covering had begun making trouble for the students of the school. Petunia wondered if this was part of what Lily, Severus, and their friends were worried about.

Petunia watched as spells from the wands of the troublemakers flew fast and hard at all the children there, including the youngest and most vulnerable. Which just made Petunia angry that someone would target those that couldn’t fight back. The irony of those thoughts were not lost on her and it would take some time alone to work through those ugly emotions. But in the present situation she couldn’t afford to let her thoughts wander.

“Everyone, get back inside!” A voice rang out and Petunia looked to see who it was. The Wizard she would recognize anywhere from Lily’s letters. Dumbledore was certainly a sight to behold.

“Headmaster…” Lily began, but Petunia gave her a curt nod telling her to get back in the pub with the others. Siobahn came up beside Petunia as the two slowly backed up watching the scene in front of them. When an errant spell came their way, Petunia didn’t even think as she threw up a shield and sent off a fireball with Siobahn beside her calling down lightning.

Several people turned towards them, staring in shock.Petunia knew about how the kids from Hogwarts weren’t allowed to use magic outside of the school, but she thought to herself that surely this was an unusual situation and the children should be allowed to defend themselves.

Petunia just smirked at the intruders who glared at her menacingly and when one of them raised a wand towards her that seemed to break the tension and the older students along with the adults began defending the younger children as some of them were ushered to safety.

Petunia didn’t think as she joined the fight. This was part of what her Aunties had taught them. How to defend themselves and how to fight not just with magic. One Witch quickly found out that Petunia could land a punch just as easily as she could wield natural magic.

“You little shit, I’m going tear you apart…” Siobahn was right there landing her own punch as the unknown assailant went down.

“No one goes after my Girlfriend you bitch.”

“Girlfriend, huh?” Petunia didn’t even try to keep the smile off her face as the two girls looked at each other with smiles even in the midst of a battle.

“Oh, yes. And as soon as these buggers are taken care of, I’m going to kiss you.”

Petunia looked at the scene in front of them, several of the intruders had been taken care of, but others had disappeared. She tried to track what was happening in front of them when in the corner of her eye she noticed a Wizard with his wand out aiming it at Dumbledore. Petunia sent a stunning spell at the Wizard, and because he wasn’t paying attention to anyone else, his defences were down and he was hit squarely in the chest and went down. Mere moments later the fighting stopped and those left standing gave off an air of confusion and frustration.

“Well, that’s not what I expected when you invited me to spend the week with your sister.” Siobahn joked just before kissing Petunia in front of everyone. Petunia didn’t even have time to protest but the smile told those who were looking she didn’t care.

Just out of her peripheral vision, Petunia heard more than saw the man she figured was the headmaster of Lily’s school. He made a noise like he was clearing his throat.

“Sir.” Petunia turned to him, pushing a tendril of her long blonde hair behind her ear to get out of her face.

“I must admit I am at a loss. I normally can name everyone in the school.” Petunia noticed a strange twinkle in the corner of the Headmaster’s eye and something about it put her back up.

“I don’t go to your school, Sir. I’m currently on break and will be going to University in the spring.”

“I see.” The man kept staring at her before he began to speak again. “I am at a loss as to explain how you were able to do what you did.”

Petunia knew from the forceful psychic pinch she received from her Goddess that the Headmaster was quite full of bullshit. She took a moment to gather herself before she spoke.

“I’m sorry, you seem to be under the impression that only those from your world are able to wield magic. I can assure you there are far stranger things in this world than even you know.” Petunia didn’t hold back as she stared down Dumbledore.

“Pet, that’s our Headmaster,” Lily practically growled under her breath as she moved next to Petunia.

“Yes, I know. But, he has to earn my respect just like Grandmama always taught us.” Petunia turned back to Dumbledore. “Surely you as the Headmaster know that there are different kinds of magical societies in the world, and yours isn’t the only one.”

Dumbledore had a smile on his face, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Petunia wasn’t sure what that was about, but she wasn’t going to let him intimidate her. Her Grandmother and Aunties instilled in all of their students confidence in their abilities, and in standing up for themselves.

“Yes, I see. The Fae are still strong in some families. Yours appears rather blessed.”

“My Gran and her Coven pay their respects to the Fae folk. We have much respect for the land and those that live beyond the veil. Can you say the same?”

Dumbledore glared and the twinkle in his eye dulled which gave Petunia pause. She was about to speak when a familiar face moved through the now small crowd of people and she smiled as soon as she saw Minerva McGonagall.

“Ah, it is lovely to see both Evans girls together. It has been a spell since I’ve had tea with your Grandmother and Aunts. How are they doing?”

Petunia’s smile was genuine when she leaned in to give the older woman a quick hug.

“They’re all lovely, Miss McGonagall. And they wanted me to invite you for dinner after the Solstice. Grandmama has a lovely new tea she wants you to try.”

“Thank you dear. Tell her I will gladly accept. Come on Albus, Auror Crouch has some questions.” McGonagall steered Dumbledore away, but there was an uneasiness in the pit of Petunia’s stomach she didn’t like.

“Pet?”

“Lils, please promise me you’ll be careful around that man.”

Lily was quiet for a moment then nodded her head. “He’s not a bad person.”

“You still have your charms, and the wards Grandmama’s coven put on you guys?”

The rest of their friends had joined them as the adults dealt with the situation. Petunia felt Siobahn lace their fingers together and moved in close to help calm and comfort Petunia.

“There are strange things happening in your world. You all need to be vigilant. I don’t really understand what happened here, but things aren’t right.”

“Please Pet, don’t tell Mummy and Daddy. Please. I don’t want them to take me home. I’ll be fine. I promise.”

Petunia closed her eyes and sent up a prayer for some guidance from Danú. It wasn’t long until she heard that soft, inviting voice telling her things were all right, and would be for the time being.

“All right, Lilypad. I’ll trust you and won’t say anything to Mum or Daddy. But, Gran might know some better protections.”

Lily took a few moments and nodded her agreement.

“Come on, let’s all go back inside and try to enjoy the rest of the day.” James grabbed Sirius who grabbed Remus by the arm and the three friends made their way back into the pub, while everyone else followed close behind. A hand on Petunia’s shoulder made her look over at Severus who wanted her to stay behind.

“What is it?”

“I don’t trust Dumbledore, and now you see why.”

Petunia looked around and at that moment, Dumbledore looked back at her, glaring. She felt a presence trying to worm itself inside her mind and she just knew it was Dumbledore. She wasn’t sure but that stare felt far more menacing that it ought to have been.

“Yes I do. Therse is something dangerous about that man that makes me itch. Promise me you’ll be careful around that man.”

“Don’t worry, I take a flushing draught every Saturday night. I’ve been giving one to James, Remus, and Sirius as well. We try to do it away from everyone because there is definitely something going on, but we can’t put our fingers on it. We only have a couple more years, and I want to get us out of here as safe as possible.”

“Keep Lily safe, Sev, Please?”

“Always, Pet.”

Petunia gave one last look at Dumbledore and let Severus manoeuvre her into the Pub, there was a lot to discuss before she and Siobahn made their way back to the rental to meet up with Petunia’s parents. Lily was going to come with them for dinner and stay the night. It took a while for the mood of the students to lighten, but when it did they all had a fun time. The unease that Petunia had never fully went away, but she felt slightly better and by the time she was falling asleep that night, most of it had abated. Though a small spark of it stayed with her and later she would look back on this day and see where the seeds of something dark and dangerous had begun.

Chapter Four: Nineteen

Fall 1977

Petunia was in her second year at University. She was studying small business management and once she finished that degree she wanted to find a good place to get her horticulture degree. Aunt Maddie was getting up in years and had already spoken to Petunia about the possibility of taking over the shop.

Petunia was considering adding on a chemist’s shop. She knew she would have to obtain the license and she was mulling over the possibility of obtaining an MPharm, but she knew that would take time. Petunia had plans for the shop and had been working on a business plan for it as she went through her classes.

Siobahn had wanted to do a backpacking tour, but Petunia didn’t want to go. The breakup was painful, and Petunia channeled that pain into school. Now it was the first day of classes which she was looking forward to. When she walked into her advanced business class and saw a young woman that seemed familiar her heart stopped as vague memories from her other life flashed in her mind.

“Marie,” Petunia was taken aback by what she remembered. Getting her emotions under control, Petunia found a seat near the other woman and smiled.

“Hi, I’m Marie Carsters. I just transferred in. I heard this is the Uni for small business and I’m rather excited.”

“Yes, I’ve enjoyed most of the courses so far.”

“I’m excited about this course. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this professor. There’s supposed to be a lot of fun practical work and not just a lot of bookwork.”

“So, you’ve been going here for a while?”

“Yes, I’ve been pushing myself and this is going to be my last year. Then I’m going for a degree in horticulture.”

“Oh?”

Petunia laughed. Not many who knew her would be surprised. She loved plants and growing things. She wanted to better understand the most important part of her potions and tinctures. In the summers for the last couple of years, she had been apprenticing to one of the other Witches in her Grandmama’s coven.

“I love growing things, and in my Aunt’s shop, we sell a lot of natural herbal products. I want to work on my understanding of the plants and flowers we use and make sure we’re doing everything as safely as possible. I have plans for the shop once Aunt Maddie leaves it for me to run.”

“That sounds rather lovely.”

“What are your plans? Obviously something business-related.”

Marie’s smile was like a ghost of a memory and it arrowed straight into Petunia’s heart. But, this was different, she was different and she would take this slowly. If they were meant to be together, then they would be. But, if they were meant to just be friends, Petunia would be happy with that as well.

“I already have a fine arts degree and am going to add business. I have been working with my Dad at his antique shop for a while now. I want to do more. I want to travel and get truly immersed in antiquities. Maybe work for a museum or something.”

“That sounds ambitious.”

“No more than your plans.”

Petunia softly laughed. When the door at the back of the lecture hall opened and the professor came through, it was a signal that class was about to start. Before the professor spoke, Petunia turned to Marie.

“Since this is my last class for the day, would you…” Petunia felt nervous as Marie looked at her with that same beautiful smile, “Well, would you like to go for a coffee after? There’s a great coffee shop not far from here that stays open late.”

“I would love that. It’s my last class as well.”

Petunia felt her heart swell as she turned to look towards the front of the class as the professor began to speak. The syllabus was passed out, and class officially began. Petunia had more than one thing to look forward to, but she didn’t struggle to pay attention as the professor was lively, funny, and made the world of business and business ownership actually interesting. The night was just getting started and Petunia had a lot to look forward to.

***

“I’m telling you, Lils, this semester has been amazing! I’m learning so much, and I’ve made some new friends.”

“Do tell, Sister mine.” Lily’s playful side was coming out as their conversation turned more personal. She was thankful that Lily had been able to have a phone in the little cottage that she and James were renting. Lily had applied to apprentice under some esteemed potions master after she had left Hogwarts, which was at the end of the semester. Lily hoped to get her mastery in potions. Petunia was still a bit confused over how some of the Wizarding World worked, but she knew her sister was happy, so that made her happy for Lily.

“It’s nothing!”

“Oh, that tells me that it most definitely is something.”

“It’s only been a few coffee dates, nothing more.”

“But they’re dates, right?”

“You’re horrible. We’re just getting together. You’re way too much of a romantic. I think moving in with James is going to your head.” Petunia heard Lily laugh before she spoke once more.

“Moving in James has been fantastic! Are Mum and Dad still mad? Or are they really as okay as they seem? Because I know Mum wanted us to wait, but Petal, I know he is the one you know?”

Petunia did know. She had watched over the years as the two circled each other, and then finally started to see each other romantically. After James learned that Lily wasn’t going to put up with a bully, especially his bullying towards Severus, he began to straighten up to become a man Lily could be proud to be with. Realising how his actions hurt others changed James in ways that surprised even Petunia. The charity work he had started made even James’ parents proud. Petunia was pulled from her musing as she knew Lily was waiting for her to answer.

“I do know Lilypad. And I think it’s lovely how you’ve grown as a couple. Promise me you and, James will stick to your plans and don’t let that Dumbledore get into your head.”

Petunia had also been watching over the last couple of years how close Dumbledore was getting to Lily and James. It scared her, she just couldn’t put her finger on why.

“And as for Mum and Dad, they’re fine. They like James as he treats you as you should be treated. I know you want a family, and I’m there for you Lils.”

“Oh, Pet. That means more than you know.”

Petunia heard a commotion outside of her room and had a suspicion it was her neighbour, Emmy.

“Hey, Lils, I have to go. I think Emmy needs help, I just heard some commotion and cursing outside.”

Petunia stood with the phone in her hand saying goodbye to Lily before leaping across the room to open her door to see what was going on.

“Emmy, I told you I’d help you when you needed it.”

Emmy looked up at Petunia and smiled as Petunia took a big bag of takeaway and Emmy’s art bag out of her hands.

“Thank you, Sweetie. I know I always try to do too much all at once, but you know me…” Emmy laughed as she opened the door to her room. She moved inside and dumped the rest of the items in her arms onto her bed. She made a flailing gesture that made Petunia chuckle to herself. She set the food bags on Emmy’s desk and her art supplies on the small bookshelf across from the bed.

“You’re not as flighty as you pretend to be Emmy.”

“Oh, no I’m worse. Mummy says I’d forget my head if it weren’t thoroughly attached to my body.”

“I doubt that. Look I have to get going, Marie is waiting. We’re going to a new jazz club. Wanna come? The more the merrier.”

“Oh, I’d absolutely love to, but I’ve got that big art project for Professor Wilkes. I need to work on my sketches. I’ll see you later then?”

“Yes, I should be back before curfew.”

“Merlin, you don’t want to get caught outside of the residence when 11:00 comes around and Dragonlady Lisbeth is on patrol.” Emmy rolled her eyes as Petunia giggled. The ‘Hall Monitor’ as the whole Hall called her, was on a power trip enforcing the 11:00 curfew for all of the girls living in the Residence. Petunia had been on the receiving end of Lisbeth’s vicious tongue a time or two, but as Petunia was usually less than five minutes late, Lisbeth couldn’t actually do anything. And, the most she could do was make a complaint to the University office.

“I’ll be sure not to get burned by the Dragon.” Petunia again giggled as she returned to her own room, changed into the new dress she had just bought, pulled on the black knee-length boots, grabbed her white denim peacoat, and was out the door. The dress she had modified and added pockets where she kept her wallet and keys. She hated carrying around a purse, and she hated how women’s fashion designers assumed women didn’t want or need pockets. Shaking her head she locked her door and was outside on her way to the fountain in the middle of the student square where she was to meet Marie.

“Hey, you look great. Love how you did your hair!” Marie smiled as Petunia came up to the other girl and put her arm through Marie’s. The two walked towards Petunia’s car, she was going to drive them into the city and to the club.

“You look great yourself.”

“I hope it’s not too crowded, I’ve been looking forward to this. I need some time to relax and not think about tests, lectures, and possibly being Professor Williams TA next semester.”

Petunia was thankful she had pulled into a parking spot on the street not far from the club.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“I didn’t tell you because I wasn’t sure, but yeah, Professor Williams wants me as her TA next semester. And, she wants me on the study abroad team if she gets approved to go to Rapa Nui. She wants the classes to be centered around the study of the impact that tourism and evangelicalism have had on the people of the Island. I’m so excited.”

Petunia wasn’t sure how she felt about this news. Of course, she wasn’t about to ruin anything for Marie, but she was sad and confused about how she felt. She knew the study abroad classes were only four months, but to Petunia, it was four months too long. Of course, she was considering applying to Merrist Wood College for their horticulture program. They had an excellent reputation and Petunia just knew she’d be able to get in. Petunia took a deep breath and struggled for a few moments to put her feelings aside, but she did. The night was supposed to be about fun and letting off a little steam.

***

Petunia curled around Marie, holding her close and thinking about the end of her second year at the University. Marie had been packed for days in anticipation of the summer study abroad program she had been accepted to. Petunia originally wanted to bring Marie home with her to meet her family, but she kept that to herself in the wake of Marie’s excitement for the program Professor Williams had personally invited her to.

Since the night they had gone to the jazz club, Petunia and Marie had been sharing a bed at Marie’s small flat. Her parents were supporting her, and because of the income from the University, the small flat was something she could afford while continuing her education.

Petunia tried not to let her sadness show as she placed a soft kiss on Marie’s shoulder before she left the bed. She needed to get dressed and get to her college residence to pack her stuff up so she could be ready to drive back to her Grandmother’s farm.

As she extricated herself from Marie’s bed, the woman turned and smiled at Petunia.

“Where are you going, Love?”

“I have got to get back to my residence so I can finish packing up. I turned in my final project already so I just need to get things sorted so I can make arrangements to get back to my Gran’s house.”

“You know you could come with me.”

Petunia looked at Marie.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“To Rapa Nui, you could come with me. I’m sure with all of your plant knowledge and stuff they’d let you come.”

“You leave in two weeks. How the hell would I be able to get permission from the professor, and the Dean, travel and everything else. It’s not possible.”

“But we could try.” Marie looked a little sad as she reached out and took Petunia’s hand in hers. “Please say you’ll try.”

Petunia threw her hands up and turned around. She thought about it, but couldn’t see a way to make it happen. Of course, as part of her studies with her Gran, she could try long distance portals. She’d researched everything she could about Rapa Nui to make sure that Marie and the rest of the students and professors would be safe.

As their semester came to a close, Petunia had gifted Marie with a pendant. One she had made and infused some of her magic into it. It was for protection, Petunia just hoped it would be enough.

“I’ll see what I can do, but Marie, you really didn’t give me time. Why didn’t you ask me weeks ago when there was still a lot of time.”

Marie sat up and scooted back against the headboard of her bed.

“I don’t know. I think I was a bit afraid you’d say no so I kept putting it off. I mean, I know you’re attempting to finish Uni by the end of next semester and you talk about your plans to hopefully get into Merrist, so I didn’t want to think about what our futures hold. You…you mean more to me than you know.”

Petunia sat back down facing Marie.

“And I feel the same for you, but you should have asked me weeks ago.”

“I know. I know and I will regret that decision, but will you try?”

Petunia already knew her answer as she leaned forward to give Marie a kiss.

“I’ll try, but I can’t guarantee anything because I’m sure everything has been set.”

“I know. But, thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet, let me see what Professor Williams says.”

Petunia got up once more, dressed quickly, and made her way back to her residence. As she approached her door she heard some talking that didn’t sound like anyone who lived on the floor. Petunia noticed Emmy’s door was ajar and the sound was coming from her room. Petunia wasn’t normally nosy, but the voice that she could now clearly make out as she leaned in closer was Dumbledore.

Confused, Petunia quietly cast a silencing ward around her so Emmy wouldn’t hear her and she leaned into the open door and listened.

“I’m telling you, Professor, she has not done anything. Not one spell, no charm work, nothing I can make out. If she is using magic, I don’t know where she’s doing it. I’ve followed her a few times, but she’s boring. Just goes to classes, out with Muggles she’s friendly with, and her girlfriend.”

Petunia was perplexed on why a Professor of a school that Lily was in her last year of attending would have even the slightest interest in her. Closing her eyes a moment, Petunia sent up a little prayer asking for guidance from her Goddess.

Petunia felt that she had to stay quiet and just listen to what was happening. A part of her was heartbroken that someone she had considered a friend, someone she had hung out with on nights she didn’t want to go out had been reporting on her this whole time. All those times of sharing pizzas, or some other takeaway, and whatever movie or show was on the telly that seemed interesting must have been Emmy tracking her or trying to find out more about her to tell Dumbledore. They often talked about their plans for the future, and generally watched out for each other. All of it now felt like a lie and Petunia tried not to let tears of betrayal fall from her eyes.

“…She has done something to her Sister, Severus, and the Potter boy. Severus was never supposed to find out about his family. We have to know what she did so we can fix this. You know what’s at stake.”

“I’ll do my best, Professor, but she hasn’t done anything is what I’m telling you.”

Petunia got a nudge that she should back away, which she did and went to her own room. She expanded the silencing ward to encompass her whole room and called Lily immediately. It was the weekend so she knew Lily and James would be at their cottage.

“Hello?”

“Lils, it’s me. Something is going on and I don’t know what. I just heard Emmy talking to Dumbledore through some kind of communication device, I couldn’t see what it was. Lily, he’s trying to find the wards I placed on you, James and Sev. He was especially upset that Severus had found his family. Please, Lils, be careful.”

“What the hell would Dumbledore care about the protections you helped to put around us?” Lily’s voice held a touch of fear and Petunia didn’t know what to do with that. She had promised to protect her family, but there were plots that Petunia wasn’t sure she knew how to deal with.

“I don’t know. He told Emmy, “You know what’s at stake”, what does that even mean?”

“There is only one thing I can think of. I know there have been grumblings about a dark wizard, one as powerful as Grindelwald was, and as charismatic. I’ve seen a couple of classmates get these weird markings, but everything is so hushed up.”

“Lily, please be careful. I don’t trust Dumbledore. I never have and for some reason, he has this person spying on me. I don’t understand his hatred for the type of magic Grandmama has taught. It’s like he thinks the only magic is your Wizarding World.”

“Yeah, they don’t teach any other types and when I’ve asked other Professors it’s like they can’t even talk about it. Except for Professor McGonagall. She’s pretty open to talking about different beliefs, different magics, and all that.”

“Yeah, well it’s because she’s friends with Gran and Gran’s Coven.”

Lily was quiet for a few moments, then began speaking again, but the weight of the conversation was heavy in her voice.

“I’ll be careful, Pet. I promise.”

“I know, and I’ll find out what it is that Emmy is really doing here.”

“Then you should be careful as well.”

“I will. Love you, Lilypad.”

“Love you Petals.”

The sisters both hung up and Petunia took a few moments to try to figure out what to do from here. Classes were ending soon and Petunia was just waiting to hear back from Merrist college to see if her application was accepted. But, after the conversation she just overheard, getting away might be a good option, so that afternoon she made plans to go see Professor Williams, and she was dragging Marie along. She wasn’t going to do this on her own, she was taking backup.

Getting off her bed, Petunia went to the small closet where a built-in chest of drawers held a few of her things. The bottom drawer was solely dedicated to her Goddess. It was the best way to keep it hidden, and she had a locking ward on it. Petunia unscrewed the drawer pull to unlock the drawer, pulled it out, and sat for a few moments to clear her mind. When Petunia was ready she communed at the altar for a few moments, then set the drawer back in and relocked it so no one who might come snooping could get in. The afternoon was closing in and Petunia had a lot more to do than what she originally planned. Going with Marie now seemed like a good idea, she just had to plan how she was going to get herself invited to go.

***

“I can’t believe you made it happen.” Marie smiled as she leaned against Petunia’s side as the plane they were on made its final approach to the Island. The airport was only ten years old, but Petunia could only wonder about its environmental impact of it and the tourism that had begun in the early 1960s.

“It took a lot of maneuvering, but luckily Merrist thought it a good idea as part of my entrance to the school. I just have to work with one of the professors from there on the paper they want me to work on while I’m here.”

“It’s a brilliant idea. I just know the next few weeks are going to be fantastic.”

For Petunia, this was a reprieve from the watchful eyes of Dumbledore and his spies. She hadn’t confronted Emmy about what she heard that day, nor the last two weeks of classes as students cleaned out their dorms and got ready to head back home or to wherever each person was headed out to.

There were a few more conversations Petunia spied on, all of them centered around Emmy not figuring out if Petunia was doing any kind of magic. She really needed to contact her Grandmother and talk about it, but there hadn’t been time. The next six weeks were going to be busy with classes, working on identifying the flora and writing about it. Petunia had not chosen her topic yet, but she knew it would come to her as she worked alongside the other students in the program.

“You’re quiet, Love.”

“Everything happened so fast I haven’t had a chance to contact my sister or my Gran. I only had enough time to tell our parents about what was happening.”

“I’m sure everything will be fine.”

Petunia leaned over and kissed Marie, knowing that everything wasn’t fine and there were dangerous things stirring up not just for Lily and James, but for herself as well. She knew she was going to need more protection once she returned to Ireland after this sojourn she found herself on.

“You’re right. I’m sure it will be.”

The plane landed and thankfully everyone acted like adults and the group all stayed together. There were some all-terrain vehicles waiting for them, but they had to get their luggage and gear, then go through customs to make sure everything was in order.

While Petunia was waiting for everyone else after she was cleared through, she saw a bank of phones and knew this might be the last time for a few weeks to get a conversation in with her family.

“Professor Williams,” Petunia got the woman’s attention while she checked off things on one of her many checklists.

“Yes, Ms. Evans?”

“I haven’t had a chance to speak with my family, I’m just going to go make a phone call at those payphones over there.”

“Of course. Just make sure you’re ready to go when everyone has gotten through customs. The yellow jeeps are our transportation to the village we’ll be staying near.”

“Thank you, Professor.”

Petunia jogged towards the phones and immediately dialed her sister, which she desperately hoped would answer.

“Pet!” Lily exclaimed when Petunia announce herself. “Where for Merlin’s sake are you? Mum and Dad said you had some kind of last-minute opportunity.”

“You’ll never guess, so I’ll tell you. Petals I’m on Easter Island of all places. Can you believe it? I was able to get on with the study abroad program and Merrist is going to let me write a paper as part of my entrance consideration.”

“Why the hell did you do that?”

“I had to get out of England Lils. Something is not right and I needed the distance. Emmy was getting weirder around me, and that Dumbledore is too interested in me and my abilities. Please, Lily while I’m here check on Gran and Grandad. Make sure they’re okay.”

“I will. Please be careful, Petal. And please try to keep in contact if you can.”

“I promise. I have to go, looks like the group is all through customs. I don’t know what Dumbledore wants, but Lily, whatever you do you have to protect yourselves.”

Lily was quiet for a couple of moments before she spoke once more. The gravity of the situation wasn’t lost on her as her voice took on a tone that worried Petunia.

“I will protect those that are ours with my life, Petunia. I promise.”

The weight of something washed over Petunia, she didn’t want to ponder on what it could mean as she said a final goodbye and hung up the phone.

“Come on, Ms. Evans. Everyone is ready.”

“Just finishing up, Professor,” Petunia called out and met with the others after grabbing her backpack and gear bag to join them at the waiting vehicles. The next few weeks, Petunia knew were going to be both exciting and a little scary, but she trusted herself and she trusted her Goddess and that was all she needed.

Petunia thought about her sister and her friends. She hadn’t spoken with Severus much over the last couple of years, the two of them having different paths to follow, and how their schedules never seemed to match up. Severus had settled with his new family and they were working on getting to know each other better. Petunia didn’t begrudge him the time, she knew he needed it. She promised herself that when she made it back to Ireland she was going to make plans to catch up with him and hoped that he was keeping himself safe as well.

Chapter Five: Twenty-One

Spring 1979

“Look at you! You look beautiful.” Mrs. Evans gushed over the fact that her oldest daughter was a University graduate. The two years at Merrist were challenging, but Petunia loved every moment of it. The paper she had written about a unique flower found only on the Island of Rapa Nui clinched her acceptance to the school.

“Mum, you’ve already said that a million times already.” Petunia was between her parents, who were all smiles on this momentous day.

“And I’ll say it a million more. Now, where did your sister and her friends get off to?”

“They’re going to meet us at the restaurant. And please, Dad, be nice to James.”

“Hmm, I just believe they are too young to get married. Nineteen, they’re still just kids.”

“But they know what they want, Dad. And, they really do love each other. Don’t think I don’t see you and Mum eyeing me and wondering when I’m going to get married.”

Petunia’s parents went silent for a moment as they continued to walk towards the parking garage of the University.

“What?” Petunia looked between her parents.

“Oh, honey. We…”

Petunia knew she was frowning and couldn’t help the confused look that came over her.

“You…what?”

“Darling, you know you can tell us anything. Anything at all and we’ll still adore you.”

Petunia was rooted to her spot and didn’t say anything for a few moments.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Petunia’s nerves were on edge as she stood rooted to where she was standing. While she had talked to her Gran about her sexuality she had never talked to her parents about it.

“Oh honey, we’re not blind. We’ve been waiting for you to talk to us.” Mrs. Evans smiled softly as she walked over and took Petunia in her arms and gave her a hug. “You’re Dad and I will love you no matter what.”

“Oh. Um, Dad?”

Mr. Evans smiled as he too came over and pulled his daughter into his arms.

“You’re Mum and I have been so proud of you and your sister. We know you’re both different people and I hope we’ve never treated you as if you weren’t. Nothing you could tell us will make us love you any less than what we do.”

“Oh.” Petunia felt her eyes fill, but she sniffed back the tears that threatened to fall. “I love you both so much.” Taking a deep breath, Petunia gathered her courage and smiled nervously as she looked between her parents. “Mum, Dad, I…” Swallowing back the moisture in her mouth Petunia nodded once before she continued. “Mum, Dad, I’m queer.”

“Oh, love. We know. We’ve always known, but I’m glad you finally told us. This changes nothing other than we hope you find someone who will love and respect the woman you have become.” Mr. Evans gently squeezed Petunia’s arm, as her Mum held her close and let her know that she was still loved.

“Now, come on, I’m sure everyone is waiting for us.”

Petunia put aside the emotions that got too big for her to deal with at the moment. Today was celebrating her graduation. She had plans in place, but first she was going to introduce her parents to Marie and hoped they would come to love her as they had come to love James Potter.

Getting to the family owned Italian restaurant that the Evans family had been patronising for years wasn’t difficult, traffic was light and Petunia and Marie were actually on time. The owners knew them and always welcomed them with warmth and open arms. Today they had cooked some of their specialties just for Petunia and she was overwhelmed by their generosity.

Before they all sat down to eat, Petunia pulled Marie over towards her parents who were getting some refreshments from the table that had been set up with cold fizzy drinks, waters, and bottled ales.

“Mum, Dad, I know you’ve met Marie before, but,” Petunia looked at her girlfriend and couldn’t help the soft smile that slowly formed as she turned once again to her parents, “You haven’t been introduced to my Girlfriend.”

Marie looked at Petunia in shock, before she turned to the Evans, smiled and held out her hand.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Evans.”

“Oh, Marie, love. None of that. Come here.” Petunia’s Mum engulfed the young woman in her arms and held her close, then her father did the same. “You will be welcomed in our home just as you always have. We haven’t been as blind as our daughter believes we were. I’m just happy you both can be who you are around us.”

Marie let out a soft shocked sound, but quickly recovered as she took Petunia’s hand.

“Thank you, that means more to me than you’ll ever know. My Da wants to meet you both. I’ve just never known…”

“We’d love to meet him. Why don’t you both come for Sunday roast. We’ll make the arrangements if you have him give us a ring.”

“I will. He’ll be thrilled. Though, just to warn you, my Da is a bit odd, but he’s the best.”

“I’m sure we’ll find him delightful. Now, let’s concentrate on Petunia today as it’s her big day.”

Petunia turned back towards the table and saw Lily and James looking at her with smiles on their faces. Severus, Sirius, Remus, McGonagall, Simon, Petunia’s Aunts, and a couple of other friends Petunia had made through school and her travels were all there for her and her heart was fuller than she had ever thought possible. Petunia was fully aware as of late of her past life, Danu had given her all of her memories. She didn’t want to be that terrible, bitter person she had become in that previous life. It happened on Rapa Nui one night as she meditated. Danu made a rare appearance and told her it was time. Time that she knew the full measure of her past and how much she had changed. Looking around the table at friends and family, Petunia was immensely grateful for the second chance at her life. She was making up for other hurts and other wrongs she had done besides paving the way to let her future nephew into her heart. The warm feeling deep inside where her Goddess lived bloomed bright and she knew she was still on the right path, wherever that would take her.

***

“There you go, Mrs. Connelly. Just use this when the aches are giving you more trouble than normal. Gently wrap the area in a warm towel, but don’t put pressure, you want a gentle heat that will soothe.” Petunia finished rining up one of her regular customers when the bell above the door to Mystical Apothecary jingled letting her know a new customer had entered the store.

“I’ll be with you in a moment.” Petunia finished up with Mrs. Connelly then turned her attention to the newcomer. “Afternoon, can I help you with anything in particular?”

The customer turned towards Petunia and smiled. When he did, Petunia knew exactly who she was looking at and it was a little disconcerting.

“I see. Are you here to spy on me Mr. Scamander?”

“If I were to spy on you, Ms. Evans, I wouldn’t be standing here in front of you. No, I’ve come to see why you of all people has Dumbledore’s knickers in a twist.”

Petunia tried not to smile, but she felt the upturn of her mouth as she tamped down on the laugh that wanted to escape her lips.

“Frankly, Mr. Scamander, I have no idea why Dumbledore is so interested in me. I’ve done nothing to gain his attention, and I would think the headmaster of a school would have better things to do than spy on a humble shopkeeper.” Petunia moved towards the front of the shop and flipped the open sign to closed, locked the door and pulled down the old-fashioned shade before stepping towards the back office area, beckoning the man named Newt Scamandar to follow.

“I was going to make myself a cuppa, would you like some?”

Newt walked in, leaning heavily on a cane as he moved towards a comfortable looking couch that took up one of the walls in the spacious office.

“Thank you, I wouldn’t mind one.”

Petunia went about preparing a pot of tea in the small kitchen that was on the other side of the office. She had excused herself for a few moments to get herself together and make the tea.

She tried not to think about why Newt Scamandar was there as she set up the tray with some tea biscuits, a plate of sandwiches Marie had made for her which she cut into fours, and a couple of leftover sausage rolls that reheated well in the toaster oven. Aunt Maddie had the kitchen added onto the store to make it easier to make some of the oils, creams, and tinctures the store sold. Petunia was thinking about things that could be done to improve the space, but that would come later as she sketched out some plans to renovate some of the store.

As she picked up the tray and took it back to the office, Petunia cleared her mind and took a few moments to make sure her shields were in place and her personal wards were still strong and impenetrable as possible.

“It’s not a full proper tea, but something to satisfy for the time being.” Petunia sat down, poured them both a cup and let Newt doctor his up the way he wanted to before she leaned back with her own cuppa with a splash of lemon, and some cream. Taking a bite of sandwich, she finally turned her full attention to the other person in the room.

“Now, tell me why you’re here Mr. Scamandar.”

Newt sipped his tea while his eyes seemed to attempt to peer right into Petunia’s soul.

“I’m wondering two things, Ms. Evans. One, why Dumbledore thinks something isn’t right with you and why he’s convinced you have magic. And two, why Lady Magic herself visited me two nights ago and told me I should speak with you and listen to what you have to say.

“I was quite shocked out of my sleep, my poor Tina just about had a heart attack. Lady Magic doesn’t show herself often, and when she does, you listen.”

“My Sister does have a flare fo the dramatic.”

“Goddess! What, why are you here?” Petunia felt compelled to fall to her knees, but she didn’t. She fought to keep her dignity in front of Newt.

“Magnificent Lady, who might you be?”

Danú laughed softly as she sat on a chair that wasn’t there.

“I’m Danú, dear Newt Scamandar. My sister whom you call Lady Magic is far more dramatic than I am. However, she is quite right that ye’ should speak with dearest Petunia. Ye’ seem ta have a good head about you, use it and don’t be quick to judge.” With that the Goddess left Newt and Petunia stunned, staring at the place she had been only a moment before.

“Well, that was quite unexpected.” Newt leaned back, he set the cane on one side of the couch he was still occupying, the table Petunia set the tea service on was cleverly set up at the corner of the couch. She was in a chair that had be refurbished by her Aunt to make it more comfortable. She sipped her tea as she studied Newt for a few moments then made up her mind to trust him.

Her Goddess had showed herself for a reason, and Petunia wasn’t one to not listen when it was this important. Smiling wide before she turned towards the small fireplace next to the table, Petunia didn’t even take a breath before casting a spell.

Tine a thosú.” A mere second later the fireplace was alight with a warm, almost gentle fire. Newt raised a brow and nodded a moment.

“I see. You’re Grandmother I believe runs a rather well known coven. I believe Ms. McGonagall is an attendee rather often.”

“Yes. You see, Mr. Scamandar, Lily has told me about how the Wixen world just throws away those who a born ‘without’ magic. I propose that you don’t understand the type of magic they can wield. Ms. McGonagall has brought my Gran several students over the years that you perceive to be…what do you call them? Squibs? That seems a rather nasty name to call you kin just because they can’t do your brand of magic.”

Newt stared at her but didn’t appear to be shocked by her words.

“Hmm. My best friend was someone who couldn’t use ‘our’ brand of magic, as you called it. He wasn’t born in the Wizarding World. But there was something special about him and I wonder if he had found someone like your Grandmother if he could have developed his gift, if he had one that is.

“I admit the Wixen as a society has been stuck in some Victorian Era mindset. And sometimes if children aren’t what we expect, well unfortunately we deal with them the same way some parents would deal with a disabled child. Hide them away, turn them out, or give them over to an institution. I know you’re thinking this is horrible, and you are quite right.”

“Yes, but it’s also seems to be how us humans act when someone is different from us.”

“Quite true.”

Petunia muttered a warming spell as she picked up her tea and sipped. It was the perfect temperature and she let the warm fill her as she wondered how much to tell the man sitting across from her.

“You were led here for a reason, and I think I know why, but I’m not sure how much you’ll believe me. There’s something terrible coming and your society doesn’t know how to deal with it.”

“You mean you think another Dark Wizard?”

“I know it’s another Dark Wizard and the way your world handles it is the beginning of the downfall of magic. I know this because I lived through some of it the first time and handled things rather badly.”

Petunia let that sink in as she felt her Goddess nudging her to keep talking. Petunia was beginning to suspect that Newt was going to be invaluable in the near future. Something deep inside of her told her she could trust the Wizard. She watched as Newt’s expressions changed while he contemplated her words.

“Are you talking about time travel?” Newt’s voice was almost a whisper as he leaned forward almost across the table.

“Yes. I was given a choice after I died the first time. I’m not proud of the life I lived. I’m not proud of the person I was, but I believe that somehow knowing what I was, how bitter and hard I had become, has given me some insight into how I can be a better person. I’ve been working toward rectifying many of those mistakes and regrets I had in that life. I need to be better because if magic begins to fail, then we are all in trouble.”

“Something tells me to believe you. I don’t know how I can help you. I don’t know what Lady Magic will require of me, but I will be there, no matter the circumstances.”

Petunia felt something deep inside of her, almost like an oath was spoken and the two of them had an unspoken bond. She knew she would need allies, especially with what was coming and knowing she couldn’t change the outcome.

“I read about you. One of Lily’s textbooks. You have always been in Dumbledore’s corner. What has changed?”

“There’s something driving him. Something I don’t understand and I know it has to do with what’s been happening in the Wizarding world.”

“You mean those that are getting the marks. People going missing, murders of prominant people? Should I go on?”

Newt didn’t look surprised she knew, but he did have a concerned look on his face.

“This Dark Lord, calls himself Voldemort. A silly superstition around his name most of those in my circle won’t use it, they believe it to be a curse. This war has been going on far longer than you know, Petunia Evans.”

“Yes, I know. But therehasn’t been anything I can do about it. Those of us that your world looks down on could be allies, but you refuse any help.”

Newt sat back and closed his eyes, nodding his head. Petunia stood and left Newt for a few moments. She went to her workbench where she had several pieces of jewelry in various states of completion. The one she was most interested in, was an intricate round celtic knot in the shape of a tree and dangling from it were charms of a Dragon, a Hippogriff, and a Unicorn. It was something she had been compelled to make for no particular reason. Talking to Newt, she had come to the realization of who this had been made for. Taking up the necklace she walked back to the office where Newt was standing and snooping.

“You can snoop. Nothing here for you except this.” Petunia held up the necklace and as soon as Newt saw it he walked towards it like he was thoroughly enchanted.

“What a beautiful piece.”

“Yes, I was compelled to make it. I know now this was going to be yours when we met. There is a ward built into it, please, take it and wear it. I have a feeling you are going to need the protection sooner rather than later.”

Newt took the necklace and Petunia smirked at the shocked look on his face.

“Lady, you have no small amount of talent. It is a good thing you are on our side. I will wear this with pride. Now, I must take my leave. I hope this will not be the last we see of each other.”

“I hope so as well. Be safe, Newt. And here is something for you. I know the real name of Voldemort. I didn’t in my previous life, but the knowledge was given to me in this life by Danú. She was adamant it was important.”

“May I ask what it is then?”

“Tom Marvolo Riddle. Danú said the right person would know what to do with this information.”

“Bloody hell. What has Dumbledore done.”

***

“Stop fussing, Marie, it’s just my friends and family.”

“I know Pet, but I have barely gotten to know your friends as they never come to our parties. It’s always my friends, or people from the shop that you invite on a whim. I’m just a bit nervous.”

Petunia smiled softly as she wrapped her arms around her partner, holding her close.

“Don’t be. This will be fun.”

Petunia’s grandmother had gifted her an outdoor table that they no longer use at the farm. It was set out in the common area where she and Marie were renting a cottage. The neighbors had all kept to themselves partly because of the ward boundary Petunia had set-up to keep pying eyes from the cottage.

“You never answered my earlier question, Pet. Are they, you know, like you?”

Pulling away, Petunia began to fiddle with the set-up for the drinks, and all of the sides that had been finished a few moments prior, while the roast was in the oven finishing up.

“Is that what you are afraid of?”

“No. I mean I’ve watched you while you work on those charms and such you make. It always feels, I don’t know, really nice. I feel safe.”

Petunia smiled as she leaned on a porch beam while watching her lover putter around the table.

“Do you wish I hadn’t told you about the magic?”

Marie looked up before she walked over to Petunia and stood next to her and leaned against Petunia.

“No. Since we first met, I wondered what it was that made you different. Don’t get me wrong, I found everything about you charming. I just knew you weren’t telling me everything. I’m glad you finally told me everything.”

“I knew this couldn’t work between us if I didn’t tell you. I’m just happy you didn’t think I was crazy.”

Marie gave Petunia a quick kiss on the cheek. Nothing scandalous. Even though there was a ward boundary, their neighbors could still spy, and there was nothing the English didn’t like more than local gossip. Petunia didn’t even try to hide the smile as she playfully pushed Marie aside. It wasn’t but a moment later when Lily and James, then Remus, Sirius, Severus, and a new couple that Petunia had only met recently, Alice and Frank Longbottom arrived.

Petunia knew there was something she should have remembered about Frank and Alice, but for the life of her she wasn’t sure what it was she was supposed to know. If it was important, avoidable, and didn’t interfere in what was to come, Petunia trusted that her Goddess would let her know in some way. For now, she would get to know the couple that had become close friends with her sister.

“Everyone, I’m so happy you could come. Our cottage maybe small, but I’m glad you all could make it to our little housewarming. Grandmama and Grandpa will be here later, but we wanted our first Sunday roast with all of you.”

“Oh Petals, you know we wouldn’t be anywhere else. And I hope you show me around.”

Petunia stood, threaded her arm through her sisters, and the two went to the front of the cottage, then called for Alice to join them.

“You boys help Marie with whatever she needs. The roast is almost done, then at the last few minutes we’ll make the yorkies and we’ll eat. I’m going to show the girls around the cottage.” Petunia turned back and pulled her sister and Alice into the cottage and shut the door.

“Okay, I didn’t want to bring this up in front of Marie. She’s taken the news of magic is real like a champ, but I didn’t tell her everything that’s going on. You both are safe, are you?”

“Yeah, we’re being safe. Petals. I promise.”

“Oh, Lilypad, I just worry. This Tom Riddle, everything you’ve learned, everything I’ve been told he sounds dangerous.”

“He is,” Alice stated matter-of-fact as she walked toward the small living room. “Oh, this is charming, Petunia. I love how you’ve decorated this place.” The room was alive with color. There were bright paintings, colorful striped pillows, with soft patchwork throws. A telly was in the corner and a couple of comfortable reading chairs had been set up across from the couch.

“Thank you. Gran has given us a few things, and then Mum took us shopping. We found that couch at the charity shop and the two of us refurbed it ourselves. Come on, I’ll show you upstairs.”

On the way up, Petunia wondered if she should bring up the visit from Newt Scamandar. She felt more than a nudge inside, it felt almost like a shove.

“All right, I’ll tell them, for fuck’s sake.”

“Oh dear, you never use that language, what’s going on, Pet?” Lily asked as they walked into the office that had been set-up for both herself and Marie. There was no mistaking whose corner was whose. Shanks of brightly dyed thin leather strands hung from hooks that had been embedded in an old desk with a vanity that Petunia had added shelves and drawers to with her Grandfather’s help.

The drawers held die cast figures from Thor’s hammer, to mythological creatures, to representations of the Gods and Goddesses. Each one meant something and each would end up on the end of one of Petunia’s intrigue celtic knots.

“I was wondering if I should tell you about my visitor the other day and it felt like my Patron Goddess was practically shoving me.”

“Oh, well it must be important. Who was it?” Alice’s eyes widened with curiosity.

“Newt Scamander.”

“What? Why?” Lily lowered herself in one of the chairs as almost all colour drained from her face. “Are you okay? Did he do anything?”

Petunia sat opposite her sister while Alice grabbed a stool and sat between them.

“I’m fine, Lil. No he didn’t do anything. He was curious about me and wondered about Dumbledore’s obsession with me. It’s never made sense, to be honest. Also, Emmeline Vance has taken residence in one of the cottages across from us. Oh, she tries to disguise herself, but I can easily tell it’s her, even with her disguises.”

“But, why?” Alice asked as she began to look around Petunia’s work desk. “These are lovely, by the way. You make them?” Alice asked as she picked up a sterling silver winged unicorn. The horn had been made out of polished and carved blue goldstone, a crystal that sparkles as if it had been dipped in glitter.

Petunia watched as Alice held the little silver figurine. Something flashed along Alice’s aura and Petunia knew that pendant was meant for the woman. She would create a ward, something deep inside was telling Petunia to make it one that could withstand curses and other attacks. She would make one for the husband as well. Petunia’s Goddess was nudging her in a way that let her know this was more than important, it was critical.

“I think its meant for you. I’ll make something special for you before you leave.”

“Oh, please you don’t have to.”

“I want to. I have a feeling that was meant for you. And after we have our Sunday Roast, we’ll have your husband pick out a pendant and I’ll send you home with them.”

“I..” Petunia could tell that Alice was going to protest, but then she just smiled and nodded her acceptance. “All right. It’s very generous, so thank you.”

“So, back to Emmy. Why are they watching you?”

“I believe it’s because Dumbledore believes I shouldn’t be able to use magic. In fact, I have a theory, Lils.”

“Oh, and what, dear sister, is this theory.”

“Those you call squibs are just witches of a different nature. Maybe a hedgewitch, or kitchen witch. But, something, or more precisely someone has invented this nonsense that they are less than just because they are not able to do the same as you.”

Alice slowly sat down on the stool and frowned a bit before she spoke again.

“I have a cousin. She’s only thirteen, but she had been showing signs of, I don’t know spirits around her. Or fairies talking to her and such. My Gran thinks it’s nonsense and sent her to live with an Uncle who is No-Mag. I’m wondering if she’s like you Petunia.”

“Hmm, if you give me her name and a way to contact her, maybe my Gran can assess her and see what’s happening. I believe there are far more of those that are magical than your world wants to admit to.”

“I’ll do that. She wants to be like me so much, it was heartbreaking to send her away.”

Petunia sat in contemplation wondering just how big of a role she was headed towards in helping those that have been turned out of Wixen Society and how much was the machinations of Dumbledore or Tom Riddle. She refused to call him by that ridiculous name he had chosen for himself.

“I think Newt wants to become my ally. But for what, I’m not sure. I got the impression he was disillusioned with Dumbledore.”

“You will be careful, Pet?” Lily moved to the chair Petunia was in and plopped down in her lap. Petunia pulled her into a hug and held her sister for a moment before she found her voice through the emotions that welled up from deep inside of her. She knew something bad was coming that she would have no way to stop.

“I will, Lilypad. I promise.” Petunia let her sister go, who stood up and the three women left the office. Petunia finished showing the rest of the cottage and then the three of them traipsed back down to the kitchen and helped Marie finish up getting the Sunday roast dinner on the table.

“This looks wonderful, Petunia.” Severus had come into the cottage and Petunia easily went in for a hug from her friend.

“The bulk of the dinner was done by Marie. Now, come on lets help her set everything up outside.”

Petunia knew Severus wanted to ask more questions, but she shook her head no.

“We’ll talk later, I promise.”

“All right. I trust you to tell me what’s going on. Also, I have a fresh batch of those potions for your Wixen patrons.”

“Thanks, Sev. You’re the best. Now, tell me all the dirt.” Petunia smiled as they all helped to get the table set and the food laid out for everyone to serve themselves. Gossip flowed and Petunia noticed the flirting going on between Severus and Sirius, she wondered if there was something more going on there and if the two of them were going to be stubborn, or admit that they liked each other. They may have had a rocky start, but Lily and her friends had come a long way and Petunia was determined to do what she could to protect them in whatever way she was able to.

Later that night she worked on the knots and wards she wove into Alice and Frank’s jewelry. When shown the workroom, Frank had been drawn to a Griffin. He opted for it to be turned into a bracelet he could wear on the arm opposite his wand arm. Petunia worked for a couple of hours, infusing the leather with strong warding that hopefully would protect them from what was coming. When she was done with each piece, she took a deep breath and prayed to her Goddess to guide her hand and to strengthen the wards. A deep golden glow flowed from her hand and into the bracelet, giving it added protections. She did the same with Alice’s necklace and her Goddess once more honored her prayer with the extra protections.

When she was done, she set them aside to bathe in the full moon’s glow and would get the pieces to them by the end of the week. They needed time to settle and cure.

Crawling into bed that night, she wrapped around Marie, laying a gentle kiss on her shoulder feeling a warm contentment she had grown accustomed to. It was a feeling that had always alluded her in her previous life, she was determined to keep the feeling and to keep moving forward to what she knew was coming. Closing her eyes she wished she could save everyone, but she knew that wasn’t going to be possible. She just hoped she could save some of them. A gentle breeze blew against her hair almost as if her Goddess was comforting her, it was only a moment later when she fell into a deep sleep with only good dreams following.

Chapter Six: Twenty-Three

Early Spring 1981

“I’m so sorry for your loss…”

“Oh honey, he was such a good man, and he was so good to you…..”

Petunia watched and listened as the line of well wishers moved through the house while a group of locals had started up playing some of her Grandfather’s favorite songs. She currently was watching baby Harry while Sirius was playing with baby Neville as Lily, James, Alice, and Frank helped out in the kitchen with the food. Alice and Frank had become another fixture around the small farm. Her Grandmother loved it when all of Lily and Petunia’s friends came around to visit, sometimes staying for a few days at a time. They were all a comfort now as they helped out with the wake.

Petunia hadn’t been ready to say goodbye to Grandfather Ó Flannagáin. He had been a quiet man, but he was always there when anyone needed him. Petunia looked over to see her Mum and Grandma holding onto each other, their grief clearly visible on their faces. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes as she tried to handle her own grief.

“How are you, Pet?” Severus sat down next to her, looking young, healthy, and rather dapper in the dark expensive suit he was wearing.

“I’m going to miss him so much, Sev. He was a good man. He loved Grandmama so much, I don’t know how she’s going to handle being alone.”

Marie walked in with two plates of food in her hands. Severus reach over and took baby Harry so Petunia could take one of the plates.

“I have every faith that your Grandmother will be just fine.”

“I know she’ll put up a good front. I never thought anything could break her, Sev. But losing Grandad, I don’t know. It’s going to be hard for her.”

Harry cooed as he bounced in Severus’ lap.

“I don’t know why this child likes me.” Severus frowned as Harry laughed before patting Severus’ face.

Petunia tried not to laugh, but it was just too funny.

“Oh, that is quite a wonderful sound to these old ears.”

“Gran, here sit, I’ll get another chair.”

“I’ve been sittin’ all day. I’ll be fine to stand here fer a moment. Severus, young man, that child adores you because ‘yer a good man. He’s something special, aren’t you Harry?”

Harry turned towards his Great-Grandmother and smiled wide and began to bounce even more.

“Harry, what are you doing you silly thing.” James came to Severus’ rescue as he scooped up the baby in his arms.

“I brought a chair for you, Grandmother.”

“Thank you, son.” Petunia watched the interplay with her family and a far different scene flashed in her mind. It took her by surprise and she had to get up and leave to get her emotions under control. She barely whispered her apologies before she ran up the stairs to her old room.

Collapsing on her childhood bed, Petunia squeezed her eyes shut against the memories that she knew she was meant to see, but they had scared her knowing that had been her at one time.

“Petal? Are you all right?” Lily’s voice could be heard from the doorway. “Do you mind if I come in?”

“It’s okay, Lil. I’m fine, I just…”

Lily came in and laid down on the bed facing her sister.

“What happened?”

It took Petunia a few moments to gather her thoughts enough to be able to speak. She reached out and brushed Lily’s long red curls away from her face and let her hand fall to the bed.

“Remember I told you about those dreams I had? The ones that showed a different life?”

“Oh, yes I remember.”

Petunia took a deep breath and knew if she spoke the truth, Lily would listen and believe her.

“I need to tell you what that was really about.” Petunia took is slow as she told Lily her truth. She didn’t sugar coat anything as she recounted what she remembered of her previous life and the regrets she had along the way. It took a while for her tell Lily all the things she hadn’t told her before. Lily had questions, and comments which Petunia answered what she could and took in any criticism or comments with a kind of grace she never had in her old life. When she finally done, Lily grabbed her and and held it tightly.

“Oh Petal. I’m sorry if I ever caused you to feel left behind. After living in the Wizarding World and being in the thick of this fight we’re in I can believe just about anything. Tell me, what scared you, Pet?”

“When Grandad passed in our old life, it was horrible. Gran went into a depression she never came out of. You and I fought. It was our worst fight ever and I said things I later secretly wished I could take back. It’s what made me break off all communication from you. I wanted nothing to do with you or your world.

“I’ve been trying to make things right ever since and I hope I’ve done enough, I hope I’ve lived a good enough life that I don’t…I can’t lose you again, Lils.”

“You aren’t going to lose me, Pet. I promise. I know things seem crazy, but I promis you, sister, I am not going to let you go. That dark future you talked about, that’s not going to be you. You’re a loving, smart, wonderful person. I love you.”

Petunia wiped away the tears in her eyes as she held onto her sister’s hand.

“I love you too, Lils. I promise, I’ll do my best.”

After a few more minutes of talking they both went back down to the wake. Petunia wrapped around Marie for comfort and support, while Lily sat on the floor where James was playing with Harry and Frank was outside swinging Neville around making the baby laugh loud enough for everyone to hear.

Petunia knew Lily and James’ fate, but couldn’t stop it, as much as she wanted to, it was their fate, and fate would not be thwarted. The knowledge of what was to come weighed heavier this day than it had in the days leading up to the wake, and funeral for her Grandfather.

“Ba ba. Ba ba ba.” Harry excitedly chatted and laughed as James tickled his son. Petunia looked towards her Grandmother who had a smile on her face. She new the next few days were going to be hard, but this time she wouldn’t let her Grandmother fade away as she had in Petunia’s original time. She was content to watch friends and family pay tribute to her Grandfather, and give support to her Grandmother. For such a sad day, there was also a thread of hope.

***

The Muggles, as Lily would say, all left saying their final condolences on the way out, that just left Lily and James, Severus, Remus, and Sirius. Harry was in a portable crib within easy reach of any of the adults still left in the house.

Earlier in the day Minerva had come by and spent a good amount of time with Petunia’s grandmother. The Coven had also been there, they were responsible for the majority of the food that had been brought by. Petunia’s parents had retired to one of the guest rooms on the second floor of the house, their mother had been distraught

“Gran, are you sure you’re going to be all right?”

“Lily dear, I am going to be fine. Now, it’s been a bit of a long day, you take yer boy home and get some rest.”

“Gran…”

“No, now all of you, I appreciate ‘ye bein’ here and given me support, but I’m to retire to my room and try to get some sleep. I love all of you, but I need to be alone now. So off with all of you.”

“I’ll make sure they get home safe, Gran.” Petunia watched as her Grandmother made her way up to her room. She wished there was something she could do, some way she could help, but she knew people had to grieve in their own way.

“Come on, I’ll portal you all home.” Petunia motioned for her friends to follow as she opened a portal to Severus’ home that was entitled to him through his mother’s family. They all walked through and Petunia was invited up to the house for final goodbyes before everyone left to go home.

“I’m going to go back, it’s been a long day and I don’t want to leave Gran with just Mum and Dad. Mum is taking this hard.”

“I know. Her and Grandad were so close. You keep yourselves safe, and I wish you would change your mind and stay at the farm.”

“You know we shouldn’t. I promise you, we’ll be safe, Pet.”

As much as she didn’t want to admit it, she knew that it wasn’t true. But, she couldn’t interfere. Sighing, Petunia said her goodbye’s to everyone and began to make her way back home. Halfway to the portal point, Petunia felt a presence near her. Immediately she silently activated a ward she had created only months prior. As the war in Wixen society heated up, Lily’s concern for Petunia’s safety had ramped up. Together, along with an uncle of Severus’ they had created a strong ward that kept the mind from being invaded as well as a way to alert her to any danger that came in close proximity.

There was a faint knowing of who was following her. When she turned to confront the person, Petunia wasn’t surprised to see that it was Dumbledore himself.

“Shouldn’t you be at your school? And how did you even know I was here?” Before Dumbledore could say anything Petunia held up a hand to stop him from speaking. “You have spies watching Severus, don’t you?”

“My dear girl. I believe we have gotten off on the wrong foot, so to speak. I am merely wanting to pay my condolences to your sister and you. Minerva told me your Grandfather passed and that you girls were close.”

Petunia moved a few paces away from the Wizard and had a protection spell prepared just in case.

“And why would you be concerned for me? Other than being Lily’s sister. Also, I wonder why you’ve been spying on me since University.”

Dumbledore stood with his hands behind him back, his eyes twinkled in the half moon light, and a smile on his face.

“You must be mistaken my dear girl. I don’t have any need to spy on you.” Dumbledore turned towards the portal that was slowly closing. Petunia would have to get another one up before she could go home.

“Then why are you here. And, I’m not your girl.”

“You spoke with Newt. He’s a good man of the light. I know that like me he works for the greater good.”

Petunia wasn’t sure what this was about, she didn’t think he was out to hurt her because it would hurt Lily. But, Petunia felt as if he was trying to intimidate her.

“And what does harassing me have to do with the Greater Good.”

“I’m trying to understand how you are able to use magic. Your sister is more than talented with a strong magical core. She’s strong enough for this fight our society finds itself in. But, I can’t get a read on you. You’re a muggle, your mind should be open for me, but I admit your shields are quite strong.”

Petunia narrowed her eyes and glared at Dumbledore. She needed to move, and she saw her portal shrinking fast.

“Yes, my grandmother taught me how to shield my mind. I am curious as to know why you would try to invade my mind. That’s invading my privacy and taking away my mental autonomy.”

“You are an anomaly and I won’t have it!” Dumbledore appeared to be losing his composure.

“I’m not an anomaly. I wonder how many in your society have been turned away and treated horrifically because of that attitude. I think you’ve closed yourself off to the greater society to the point where your world’s purist ideas have created an environment of eliticism and abuse.

“There are magic societies out there that are just as rich and amazing as your society. I bet I could find magic users within you society that you just throw away.”

Dumbledore moved so close to Petunia that she had a hard time standing her ground and not run away. She might be young, but she was strong and she wasn’t going to let anyone intimidate her.

“You think those…” Dumbledore’s face twisted in an ugly expression that had Petunia’s heart beating hard in her chest. “People are worthy of using magic.”

Petunia stood to her full height and looked Dumbledore in his eye.

“I think anyone who has the possibility for talent has the right to try. I know with my Gran’s coven behind me that we could find talented magic users in those you so callously throw away.”

It was a few moments before Dumbledore stepped away, but Petunia didn’t want to relax just yet. She didn’t take her eyes off of the Wizard as she created a portal back to the farm and to her Grandmother. She looked at Dumbledore once more before she dared to move and walk through the portal wondering once more why the man felt so threatened by her. Petunia checked on her Grandmother before she went to her own room. There was sense of foreboding deep inside that scared Petunia as she settled in bed next to Marie.

“I don’t think Gran is going to last long. I’m afraid we’re going to lose her.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“Yes, I do. Her and Grandfather were everything to each other. I don’t know what I’ll do, Marie.” Petunia rolled over and the truth of her words washed over her like a warm blanket. There was a knowing that wasn’t exactly a comfort, but all Petunia could do was take things as they came. Life was going to get more complicated than she realized.

***

Petunia hated that what she had feared came true. All her friends and family were there for her, except Lily, James, and Harry. They had gone into hiding and no one could tell her where they were.

“Alice, are you sure they’re fine?”

“Yes, Petunia. I promise they’re fine.”

“And the wards on you and Frank? The wards around Longbottom Manor are strong?”

“Yes, Petunia. Augusta took your advise and had the war wards reinforced through Gringotts.” Alice grabbed Petunia’s hands and held them in hers. She smiled softly while looking Petunia in the eye.

“We’re going to be fine. I promise.”

“Jus, trust me on this. After today, when you go home, stay there. Get behind those wards and as much as you may want to come out, don’t. Trust me.”

“All right. All right, we’ll trust you.”

Before Alice left Petunia chanted a spell under her breath reinforcing the ward she had given Alice years ago. She did the same with Frank, and when little Neville was asleep on the rug curled up, they knew it was time to leave.

Eventually everyone left, and Petunia was alone once again. It was late, but she couldn’t sleep so she went to the workshop to work on things that needed resupplying at the shop. Marie was on a buying trip and would be gone for another couple of weeks. They had talked the day Petunia had called emergency services when she had found her grandmother was in her bed and unresponsive. She knew her grandmother was gone, but it didn’t make the hurt any less.

She worked until late in the night when she tired herself out and finally got to bed.

The next morning as Petunia slowly woke up she felt someone in bed with her. Turning around she wrapped around Marie and finally let all of the pent-up emotions from the last few weeks out. She had not cried at her Grandfather funeral, she thought she had to be strong for everyone else, and the confrontation with Dumbledore had made her angry enough to push down any other emotions.

Her Grandmother’s death broke her especially because Lily and James were in hiding. She didn’t even know where they were.

“Pet, I’m so sorry I wasn’t here. I came home as soon as I could.”

Petunia let her emotions overtake her and Marie just held through the emotional purge. When she finally calmed down, she snuggled in closer and let her mind shut down for a while.

“Would you like some tea?”

“Yes.”

“All right, I’ll be just a few moments.” Marie left and Petunia was tempted to burrow under to covers and not come out for weeks. However, there were things that needed to be done and decisions to be made, but when Marie came back with a tray of scones and biscuits with a pot of tea her plans for the day went out the window. She pulled on soft pajamas and spent the rest of the day talking and making plans for the future.

***

Petunia walked around the farmhouse wondering if she should move in. She really wanted to, she had worked hard on helping her Grandparents to update and remodel the main house.

Marie was going to meet her later that day and there was something in her voice, something that made Petunia nervous. While waiting for her girlfriend, Petunia went to the barn and began to plan out how to change things around to possibly make room for students. Petunia wasn’t sure if she did want to teach others, but she let the possibility open.

After spending some time at a workbench Petunia went inside and put together an easy dinner of sandwiches and soups. She made a mental note to go to the village and get some groceries.

“Hey, you look like your about to murder the cooler there.” Marie walked in with some groceries in her hands. “I brought some food and some snacks. I thought we could watch some telly and talk.”

Petunia brought the plate of sandwiches over to the coffee table in the living room where Marie had some snacks and fizzy drinks laid out for them to binge on.

Petunia put off the conversation she felt was coming on and there was a warm soothing feeling coming from her Goddess. They watched some telly before Petunia finally turned it off and turned to her girlfriend.

“All right, Tell me what you need to tell me.”

“My Uncle and Dad want to move the store back to London. And…I got an internship at the Musem of London. They are working on a new antiques display and they’ve liked some of the articles I’ve done for Antiques Monthly. They want me to come on board to help with the cleaning and repairing of some of the items they have had stashed away for a while now.” Marie bit her lip and cast her eyes down towards her lap. Petunia wasn’t sure what to say, but there was that thing deep inside of her where she knew this day was coming.

“I could say I don’t want you to go, but that’s selfish. You’ve been working so hard towards this very thing. I cannot say no. Part of me wants to tell you to stay, but I know that would for me and not you. This is your dream, and believe it or not, I am proud of you.”

“Oh, Petunia. I do love you, you know. I wish you would consider coming with me.”

Petunia wanted to say yes, she wanted to follow where Marie went, but her fate lay elsewhere and she would stay because she knew this was where she needed to be.

“I can’t, Marie. Here is where I need to be. I can’t explain it to you, but I have my life here. The shop, my friends, my Aunties will need me. I love you. I love you so much, but I can’t go with you.”

“I know. I knew even before I asked. Does this mean were breaking up?” The tears that fell from Marie’s eyes broke Petunia’s heart because she felt her own eyes leaking. She wished she could make this right, but she knew this day was coming.

“I wish…” Petunia leaned forward and kissed Marie, softly at first, then she put all of the emotion she felt for the other woman into the kiss. When she pulled away, she laid her forehead against Marie’s.

“Don’t wish. When do you leave?”

“I have a few weeks.”

“Okay, then we have a few weeks. Let’s make the most of it.”

Marie smiled and held Petunia close.

“All right, we’ll treasure every moment we are together. I love you.”

Petunia didn’t stop the tears that spilled as she smiled through the sadness. “I love you too.”

***

October 31st 1981

Petunia opened the portal and ran through finding herself in front of Godric’s Hollow and her heart hammered in her chest. She knew what she was going to find and the scene was more devastating than she had anticipated. Petunia felt those emotions from her previous life and regretted every one of them as she viewed the devastation in front of her.

The fence that had been around the front of the cottage was in shambles. The front door was nothing but splinters, windows blown out, and all of the plants and trees she had helped Lily plant were uprooted and destroyed. The scene broke Petunia’s heart. Slowly she moved forward knowing what she was going to find and tried to prepare herself for it.

“I’ll fucking kill the little bastard,” Petunia heard Sirius Black bellowing as he started to run out of the house. As he began a spell to apparate he stared at the portal that was still open, then looked around, his wand raised threateningly.

“Petunia. I…”

“Yes, I know. Where’s Harry?”

“Safe, in his crib. I don’t have time for you. I need to find that little bastard betrayer and kill him!”

“You can’t, Sirius. Trust me on this. You can’t go after him. You need to contact your aurors, and we need to take care of Harry.”

Sirius’ face screwed up in anger as he stalked over to Petunia.

“What I need is to get revenge for Lily and James!”

Petunia knew Sirius was feeling anger, pain, and an overwhelming need for revenge, but she had been given the memories of what would happen if Sirius was left to his own devices. Taking a step forward, Petunia sighed as she laid a hand on his arm.

“No, Sirius. If you go after Pettigrew, you’ll ruin your life and put Harry in danger.” Even though Petunia had changed her own circumstances there was no guarantee that Dumbledore wouldn’t try something to get at Harry. She needed Sirius to help her navigate the Wizarding World and what it would mean to take custody of Harry. She knew Lily’s Will would need to be read out in their courtroom, but Petunia didn’t live in that world, but she knew enough from Lily and Sev that would help her now.

“And how do you know that? You’re not part of this world. You know nothing of us.” Sirius growled out and Petunia slapped him out of anger. Something she wouldn’t normally do, but it brought Sirius up short.

“How dare you, Sirius Black! I’ve been with you since Lily brought you into her circle. You spent time at Grandmama’s farm, you, James, and even that little bastard Peter were all part of our circle. Severus is one of my best friends. I say again, how dare you, you jackass.” Petunia was close to slapping him again for belittling her at the wrong time.

Sirius looked struck as Petunia yelled at him while giving him a death glare. They didn’t have time for this. And she let him know that by walking away and yelling at the same time.

“Get your ass in there and help me with Harry. He’s what’s important right now. If you don’t want Dumbledore to get to my Nephew, you’ll help me!”

Sirius, for once, looked contrite as he followed behind Petunia as she entered the house and immediately heard Harry crying. She knew time was running out on the portal and she needed to get Harry and get through the portal quickly. As she ran up the stairs, Petunia ignored the destruction of the house around her, the only thing spurring her on was Harry’s cries.

The moment she ran into the nursery, Petunia fell to her knees at seeing Lily’s body slumped against the crib. She continued to ignore Harry’s whimpering cries as she wrapped her arms around Lily and let out a heart-wrenching cry of her own.

“Oh, Lilypad. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t help.” Raising her eyes up, Petunia felt herself breaking inside. She had promised her Goddess to let things happen as they should, but being confronted with the reality was tearing her apart. Lily had become her heart, unlike her previous life where she had let jealousy and hatred reign. Petunia hadn’t been prepared for this pain and it was only the gentle hand and even gentler voice of Sirius that brought her back.

“Hey Petal,” The old endearment slipped and made Petunia look at him. “You’re right, we need to get Harry. I’ll stay here, I promise. I won’t do anything stupid. I’ve contacted my superiors and they’ll be here soon. Come on. I promise we’ll take good care of her.”

Petunia closed her eyes as she held Lily close to her and laid a gentle kiss on her forehead. She knew she had to let her sister go. Harry’s cries had softened to hiccups as she stood and picked up the toddler in her arms.

“I’m taking him to my Grandmother’s farm. Lily had the Goblins make it unplottable, but you know where it is. I’ll keep him safe. I know you’re his Godfather and I won’t…” Petunia held the boy close as he clung to her fiercely, she attempted to keep her feelings under control. “I won’t keep him from you. We can talk about what happens next.”

Sirius nodded and Petunia ran out of the house with Harry in her arms. She didn’t even have time to get any of his things, she hoped that Sirius would think to grab clothes and other things for the baby. She had money, but she didn’t want to take time to go to any stores, she wasn’t sure how much danger Harry or herself might be in. She would wait for Sirius to come to her to let her know what was happening.

She knew Lily had set up some contingencies for her at the Wizarding bank, but Petunia didn’t feel comfortable going to Gringotts, at least not without a Wixen escort beside her.

Thankfully when she ran out on the lawn the portal was still there but had begun fading. Petunia barrelled through and it closed right behind her. The whole incident took only a few minutes, but it felt like a lifetime.

Collapsing on the floor in the front of the farmhouse, still holding Harry, Petunia broke down. Harry started crying again and calling for his Ma. Petunia cursed all the Gods she could name as the reality of what she knew was to happen had come to pass.

After what seemed like forever, Petunia pulled herself together, wiped her face with her shirt and set Harry on his feet. She knew the boy could walk and had been running and playing already the last time she had seen Lily and James before their world turned upside down.

“Harry, I know you won’t understand right now, but I made promises to your mum, to my Goddess, and to my family to protect you and that is what I plan on doing. Don’t worry, no one in your world knows this place except Sirius and my friend Severus.” Lily had brought James a few times, and Sev had spent many summers here, but never Peter. Petunia had only ever met the little rat fink when Lily and she had hung out around Diagon Alley, or the times when Petunia got to go to Hogsmead at Christmas time. Petunia never liked him, but Lily wouldn’t hear her warnings.

“Come on, I’ll clean you up then we’ll see what’s to eat.” Petunia had been transforming the farmhouse soon after her grandparents passed away. She had her herb and plant garden in the back of the house, a lab where she made her potions, tinctures, salves, bath and body products, as well as medicinal items. The licenses to create the products displayed in the lab. The basement had been cleaned and modernized. The kitchen was up to date, and each of the rooms had been renovated.

The whole project had taken some time and had started when Petunia turned 21. Knowing what was going to happen in the future made her make hard decisions, but she was lucky in that her Grandparents were in agreement with all of the changes and upgrades she made before they had both passed away. Petunia shook her head to clear her mind of memories she didn’t need at the moment.

Taking Harry upstairs to the room she had made just for him, she got him into the ensuite bathroom where there were baby things all over the place. Harry had stayed there before when Lily and James had needed time to themselves, and Petunia kept buying little things here and there. She knew she would need more, but that would come later when she could think more clearly.

Getting Harry into the bath was easy, the boy loved bathtime. Helping him get clean and changed gave Petunia some time to process that the events that she knew were going to happen had come to pass. This was the moment that the rest of her future was unclear. Everything in her life since Lily’s birthday party culminated at this moment, and Petunia had promised to raise Harry in love. The knowledge that she had treated him terribly in a past life was fading from her memory, but she cursed her past self and wondered at how she could have been that cruel.

“I promise you, Harry James Potter, that you shall never know a cruel hand, hear unkind words, or live in horrible conditions. I promise you that you shall only know love and kindness from me from this day forward, so mote it be.” The magic came on quickly and unbidden. She had sworn an oath, which was just as powerful for her type of magic as it was for Wizards. The thread that now connected her to Harry was bright and strong. If she ever broke her promise, the thread would be broken, and Petunia would give up her very existence.

Reaching out, Petunia laid a hand on Harry’s head, smoothing back his already wild hair and smiled.

“It’s you and me now, Harry. We have a whole new future ahead of us and I plan on making the best of it.”

“See that ‘ya do now, Girl. The child was a favorite of mine, and he shall be again. And ‘ye know his heritage and what he is destined to be.”

Petunia turned around and stared at the being that spoke.

“And who the hell are you?” Petunia moved to sit on the edge of the bathtub, keeping an eye on Harry at the same time she got ready to defend him.

The being bowed low and spoke again, “I dear woman, am Finn McCool. You made some dear promises. And I’m to see that ‘ya keep to ‘em.”

Petunia’s eyes practically bugged out as her heart raced.

“The Fey have not had any interest in us for a long time. What do you want now.”

“Aye, we’ve left you all alone far too long, Child. This boy is just as important to us as he is to you. I give you a gift.” Finn stepped forward and laid a hand on Petunia’s head. Warmth spread out from him down to her very core. “You’ll figure it out when you need it. He is special in more ways than ‘ya know.”

Petunia heard Harry laughing as something flew around his face. He reached out and a small being landed on his finger, fluttering their wings and laughing with him.

“Peregrine here will stay with him. She’s a pixie, but don’t be fooled by her size, she’s a mite powerful and will help you protect the boy.”

“I promise, my King, to always be by his side.” Peregrine bowed low which made Harry giggle even harder.

“That’s a girl.” Finn smiled at the Pixie then turned back to Petunia. “You’ll know how to call on me once I’m gone, but I am here to remind you to keep ‘yer promises to our Goddess, Petunia Evans.” And with that parting remark, Finn was gone. Sighing, Petunia turned so she could see Harry and the Pixie. There wasn’t much that surprised her anymore, and Finn making an appearance, and leaving a Pixie guardian wasn’t the weirdest thing she had witnessed since making her promises to her Goddess.

“How do I care for you?” Petunia turned to watch the Pixie.

“Just give me a scratch of ‘yer garden and I will take care of meself. Plus, I’ll keep ‘yer garden safe.”

Petunia was a little overwhelmed by the day and Finn popping in like he had put her at her emotional limit. Getting Harry out of the bath and into some clean clothes she had in the small closet wasn’t difficult, the boy’s eyes were beginning to close. Laying him in the bed, Petunia lifted the sides up so he wouldn’t roll out and hurt himself, she made her way down to the kitchen with Peregrine following her.

“You’re magical, is that right?”

“Yes. But us Pixies have abandoned the Wixens. Bad blood. We stay in this world and often become familiar with ones such as you. You smell nice.” Peregrine smiled shyly as she flew into the kitchen where a small herb garden was adorning the large kitchen window.

“Oh, it’s lovely.” The little thing fluttered and sniffed around all of the herbs growing in little pots that Petunia had planted with her Grandmother. Petunia actually laughed while watching the little pixie.

“You can stay there while in the house if you’d like.”

“Oh! Oh, thank you, Missus.” Peregrine fluttered happily as she curled up in one of the pots. Petunia left her there and busied herself making dinner for herself and Harry.

After getting food plated up, Petunia went up to get Harry who was sitting up in bed babbling to himself.

“Come on, Harry love, are you hungry?”

“Mum?” Harry asked as he held out his arms.

“Mum’s not here, Harry. It’s just you and me.” Harry’s eyes filled with tears and his mouth turned down and Petunia just held him close as she walked down the stairs to the kitchen. “I have some chicken. Do you want something to eat?”

“Ch’kn,” Harry brightened up and kicked his feet in the high chair Petunia set him in. The plate had some sliced chicken, easy-to-pick-up potato wedges, and carrots. Thankfully Harry ate with enthusiasm and practically finished everything.

“J’ce?”

Petunia went to the refrigerator and pulled out some orange juice and filled a sippy cup for him.

“Yummmm,” the hum Harry made had Petunia laughing softly. She reached out and pushed back the hair that fell onto his forehead. She knew the next few days were going to be tough, but Petunia was ready for whatever was to come. She had prepared as best she could and hoped it was enough.

I am a middle-aged geek who has no intentions of growing up. I live with two fur babies and my husband who also does a good job of pretending to be a grown-up. I love comics, fiction books, knitting, ceramics, and fan fiction writing. Oh, and a glass of really good whiskey now an then. I write in a variety of fandoms and am a bit of a crossover slut. I think as long as my mind is my own, I will always find time to create new stories that I hope others enjoy as much as I do.

  1. I can’t even express how much I love this story. I am just filled with appreciation for Petunia’s journey. So impressed. Dumbledore is baffling and scary and enraging. His arrogance and presumption makes me want to bitch slap him, so well done on that character development 🙂 I’m fully engaged.

  2. Awesome story

  3. This was absolutely amazing! The way you changed so much, and yes, we all knew that some things just Had to happen (have to admit that I did hope they’d end up changing, somehow, even if Petunia couldn’t change them). But I do understand some things being inevitable, and everything she changed, either directly or indirectly meant so much…

What you did with Severus took me completely by surprise! I liked the way his character evolved, and his bond with Petunia!

    I absolutely loved this.

  4. I cannot tell you how much I’ve enjoyed reading this series. The stories are delightful. I have loved watching Petunias change from HP cannon to what you have given us. I could go on reading this series forever and I know it is one that I will come back to for many re-reads.

  5. Great take on how Petunia could have been. Also love the way you work in the “lesser” (not that they are) magic users.

  6. Absolutely wonderful! I love your world of non-wandwaving magic, especially as it gets up Dumbles’ nose!
    Really enjoyed this, thanks.

  7. I really love this story. Thank you so much!

  8. Wonderful story!

  9. How in the world you did this, I don’t know, but I loved Petunia! I cried as she entered Godric’s Hollow. I knew, but I still hoped. I’m so glad she got a second chance and made good on it. I’m still tearing up. Thank you for this gem!

  10. I love it!

  11. Great Story

  12. A thoughtful, well-written Petunia redemption fic. Now I’ve seen everything.

  13. It’s a great redemption story, and I like how she had help along her journey. I can see Harry having a much better life and brighter future from this base. Kudos.

  14. Greywolf the Wanderer

woo hoo hoo!! excellent pair of stories, these two! Mouldyshorts and Dumbledore aren’t gonna know what hit ’em, lol! bravo, Author, bravo!!! bloody well played!

  15. I really enjoyed that! And I adored the world building around Petunia’s magic.

  16. This story is so interesting and full of great new characters, wonderful job, thank you.

  17. So so good! I love your Petunia so much and her second chance!

  18. I completely forgot about Petunia being told she couldn’t save Lily and James and was hoping thoughout the story that she would find a way to save them, until she was remembering being told it was something that could not be changed and then I remembered that from the last story and that Lily and James knew that and were ready to move on.

  19. Petunia is a better person, because she worked on it and herself. Fun to see all the unknown things in the wizading world and also Dumbledore hidden sides.
