Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Title: Rest of Yesterday
Author: Jilly James
Fandom: 9-1-1, San Andreas
Genre: Contemporary, Drama, Family, First Time, Slash, Romance, mild BDSM.
Relationship(s): Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz, canon pairings
Content Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Canon-level angst and situations, kink, under-negotiated kink, erotic asphyxiation (see notes tab), character bashing, not Chimney friendly
Author Note: See tab below for world, setting, warnings, timeline, etc. There was a little easter egg for Claire.
Word Count: 78,625
Summary: Everything has been different since Chimney came back from looking for Maddie. Buck has been quiet. Watchful. Eddie is surprised at how it all eventually blows up. Buck thinks Eddie is right that he’s a fixer, but he realizes that sometimes you have to let everything fall apart to see what can be truly salvaged, and then focus on fixing yourself.
Artist: Greeneyesblue
Artist Appreciation: I adore this art; it tells something about the story and the characters that really speaks to me. Thank you for working with me on this project.

Story

Notes

Thank you to Keira and Greeneyesblue for their strong support and encouragement.

The LA Reservoir black balls can be learned about here. (the sideswipe at science was for my Saturday STEAM team.)

Regarding warnings:

  • The kink in this is a bit under-negotiated, but they do pretty much talk about everything at some point. Still, it’s not the overt communication I would normally like amongst healthy adults. People do trip into power dynamics all the time, so it’s realistic, if not ideal.
  • The erotic asphyxiation is not manual strangulation. It’s using oral sex as a means of oxygen deprivation, in the complete control of the bottom.
  • There’s an overt turn, though a fairly tame turn, towards BDSM at the very end of the story (the D/s aspect is less tame). It’s not the majority of the story.
  • Regarding character bashing: The story is sort of anti-everyone at one point or another. Buck is the main character and even he isn’t so great at times. The story is about figuring out what can be fixed in a bad situation, forgiving, and moving on. It’s not a bash fest, but it is ultimately not friendly to Chim for most of it, and I don’t think Maddie comes off great either. I always warn for character bashing, however, because a lot of fandom can’t distinguish between consequences and ripples versus character bashing.

The world…ish:

  • LAFD doesn’t have lieutenants in their command structure, but it makes more sense to me that each apparatus in a multi-apparatus station has its own leader, so go with me on this. In reality, it’d probably be another captain. I’m going with lieutenants.
  • They require 4 years time-in-service to be an engineer. I shortened it to 2. This reference in the story is very oblique, and this point isn’t all that noteworthy. I’m more putting it here so someone doesn’t email me.
  • We never see where the bunk rooms actually area in 9-1-1 canon. I have them being off the loft area, but it’s likely that they’re downstairs, and this is what’s more conventionally accepted in the fandom. I’m just stuck on them being upstairs. I actually think I took out the part of the story that dealt with the bunk rooms, but, meh. I guess the note stays.

Timeline:

  • Takes place mid season 5. I started writing around 5×05 airing and pulled in a few details from later episodes. Story references events in the first 5 episodes of season 5 and may or may not take into account events from later in the season. Since this was plotted and started long before Boston aired, most of those details are ignored.

5 Comments:

  1. Really looking forward to reading this!

  2. Sounds really great. I’ve been hooked on crosses between San Andreas and 911.

  3. Wow. You really knocked it out of the park with this one. I can already tell that this goes on the reread list. I don’t remember if I have said this before, but I really admire that your true OTP for this fandom is characters/healthy mental state. Also that you advocate putting the effort into obtaining and maintaining that.

  4. Rockstar, absolute rockstar!

  5. Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed it. Also goats in pajamas are amazing and should be talked about more.
