Author Note: Doug is not very nice in this. He dies quite early on, and as a result, Maddie never really deals with her trauma. She had not chosen to leave, and still very much had a mindset that it was her fault. She never really gets over this, and takes this out on Buck. If any of this would be triggering for you or hard for you to read, please proceed with caution or skip this altogether. While it is mostly present in the first few chapters, Maddie is a theme throughout because of the effect she has on Buck.
